1963CA0121xi446 pages with plates maps and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 3/4" bound in original wrappers. Introduction by Jose Bravo Ugarte. Preface by Martin del Castillo. Third edition limited to 2100 copies.

Born in Spain Diego Basalenque spent much of his life in Michoacán; he died in Charo Michoacán in 1651. He states in his introduction he personally knew most of the persons about whom he writes. His purpose in composing their biographies was to inspire emulation. He obviously drew heavily on Grijalva especially for earlier periods of his own Historia which gives the history of the province to 1644. He pays particular attention to Augustinian work among Indians. Basalenque divided his Historia de la Provincia de San Nicolás de Tolentino de Michoacán into three books titles of which indicate their contents. Book one reports on the state of the Province of San Nicolás de Tolentino de Michoacán when it was still part of the Province of Mexico 1553-1601. The second book covers the period after division into two provinces 1602 until about 1628. Book three deals with years 1629--44 when the "alternative" between Spanish and Mexican Augustinians was permitted alternation in the position of superiors of the Order and the religious garb of novices. Basalenque's Historia has seen three editons 1673 1886 1963. The 1886 version three small volumes has a table of contents at the end of volumes 1 and 3. Santiago Vela provides a good critical study of Basalenque's writings. Jose Bravo Ugarte gives biobibliographical data and a few notes in the 1963 editon. This and other similar other problems amused Lewis Carroll. In this book he depicts the characters and their situations and practices as acting backwards and contrariwise. Amid the general confusion and unexpected happenings Alice still shows herself charming innocent and undismayed.

St. Marrtin's Press Inc. hardcover

Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt to head end pages. First edition.

The colonization of the American Atlantic seaboard and of the southwest were practically contemporaneous and the courage faith and endurance displayed by the English in conquering the wilderness of New England were not greater nor more steadfast than those shown by the Spanish in facing and overcoming the hazards of the inhospitable southwest. The authors have chose from the wealth of material available only such of the old Spanish legends as were most worth to survive as a part of the national literature. Several of the stories appear to be historically verifiable. Others doubtless are more or less fanciful although probably even the supposedly fictional one have a substantial foundation of fact. In such of the legends as were susceptible to presentation according to short-story technique the authors added appropriate details dialogue and setting; however they did not alter the story itself. this necessitated them preserving any prejudice or error found in a legend. Explanatory matter preceding or following the body of a legend is a part thereof except where it bears the authors' initials. They believed that the character of a people would be more clearly reflected in its legendary lore than in the recital of its political history.

Condition:

Book plate to front paste down former owner's name to paste downs and front end paper corners bumped some rubbing to extremities else about a very good copy. First edition limited to 1000 copies of which this is number 749.

This work continues the work of two previous works and has served to make some adjustments on the geographical distribution and organization of religious orders in the sixteenth century. In it an attempt to study the ecclesiastical division of New Spain and the difficulties encountered by the religious to the large indigenous population is made; also thoughts to substantiate the relationship between the Western world and the Indian. The province of Chalco played a very important role because of its geographical position. To understand it not as an essential determinant but as an element that allows a geographic and human joint affecting indigenous occupations this must be taken into account.

Condition:

Front corner creased some light soiling to cover edge wear else a very good copy. First edition.

The document reproduced in the following pages is a contemporary copy of the lost Laws of Burgos. This famous code is well worth studying; it was the first comprehensive attempt to regulate relations between Indians and Spaniards and is in effect the adumbration of the policy that was finally codified in the >i>Recopilacion de las leyes de Indias. Its application here is that it contains the relatively complete plan for the reduction of the Indians to villages which is the subject of the second part of this paper. In the transcription here undertaken the spelling and punctuation have been modernized ad some errors of the copyist have been corrected. Where the text of the Preamble has been damaged at the foot of the first folio the lacunae have been supplied from the text as given by Las Casas. These and other interpolations have been set off in brackets.

Condition:

Edges chipped front wrapper beginning separate else a very good copy. 1903BOOKS054155ILondon: David Nutt 1903. HC. very good full vellum binding hardcover. ill. by Jessie Mothersole. Lucius Apuleius was born about the year A.D. 114 at Madaura a city on the borders of Numidia and Gaetulia. Of his numerous writings all that have come down to us are "The God of Socrates" "The Florida" "The Apology" "The Doctrines of Plato" "Description of the World" "Asclepius" and the romance "The Metamorphoses" or as it is sometimes called "The Golden Ass." The story of "The Metamorphoses" tells how a young man is turned by magic into an ass. With the loss of his human form he loses his power of speech but retains his human intelligence. In the course of his adventures he falls into the hands of a band of robbers who also capture a beautiful maiden. When setting out to see further booty the robbers leave the maiden and the ass in the charge of a half-tipsy old woman. This old hag in order to divert the maiden's thoughts from the evils of her situation tells her the following story. 83pp. David Nutt unknown
