12mo., on laid paper, text in Latin, with an engraved frontispiece, 6 engraved plates and engraved headpieces to each of the six books, contemporary signature on front free endpaper; contemporary calf, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, boards moderately frayed at edges and extremities, else a good, sound copy. The engraved frontispiece and plates are reduced but very skilful copies by Cl. Duflos of Van Mieris' plates in Havercamp's quarto edition of 1725. The type is entirely reset. There are occasional verbal variations, for example, 'Relligionem' for 'Religionem' on p.85; the headline 'Liber Quartus' [for 'Liber Quintus'] on p.211 is a misprint. Nice copy of an attractively illustrated edition. Gordon, 504B.

"Par son excellence, peut aller de pair avec les Racines Grecques de Port-Royal". Prodigieusement doué pour les langues, Etienne de Fourmont est le premier sinologue français. Il devint également traducteur et professeur pour les langues arabe (au Collège Royal), tartare et indienne, membre de la Royal Society de Londres et de l'Académie de Berlin. Il a composé cet ouvrage, modèle du genre, à l'âge de 22 ans. (France littéraire, III, 181. A. Choppin, 'Les manuels scolaires en France de 1789 à nos jours', n°700). Provenance : Pierre-François de Lattre-Doby ou Lastre-Doby (1696-1729), né à Dinant en Belgique, procureur général du Grand Conseil de la province de Liège, avec ses armes dorées sur les plats (O.H.R., planche 1316-1). This is a very good hardcover copy in a very good dust jacket with almost no wear. The jacket has some light foxing on the verso of the jacket, just barely visible at the lower edge of the white jacket flaps. Signed and inscribed by the author, Eleanor Ingalls Christensen, in ink on the half title-page. Also laid in an autograph letter from the author to a prominent New York gallerist who had helped with this book. The letter is dated March 1975 and in it the author says that she wanted the recipient to have it, before the actual publication date of April 30, 1975. Also a photocopied publisher's presss release for the book. Bibliography. Illustrated in color with 36 plates, and in black & white with 38 illus. 12" high X 10" wide. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Contemporary and entirely original full red leather gilt binding. Elaborately tooled variant cottage roof English Restoration binding. Front board detached. Spine with a piece out but preserved. John Cosin, Bishop of Durham (1594-1672) was Chaplain to Charles I and a liturgical purist. He was responsible for much of the revision of the Anglican liturgy during the Restoration. During the Interregnum, he was falsely accused of being a Romanist and exiled to France. "Cosin was a most uncompromising enemy to popery. In France he wrote his 'Historia Transubstantialis Papalis' at the request of Gilbert Talbot, who had undertaken to argue the matter out with a German prince (the Duke of Newbourg), in the presence of Charles II at Cologne, and apparently did not feel quite equal to the task. Cosin readily consented, and showed in his treatise that the Church of England held the doctrine of a real presence without in any way countenancing the doctrine of transubstantiation. It was not published until nineteen years after it was written and three years after the death of the author. It was given to the world, with an interesting preface by John Durel (1625-1683), in the original Latin." [this mostly from the DNB]. ESTC R2240; WING C6358.
