"Amereida" a composite neologism for "American Aeneid" is a conceptual chronicle of a literal cross-country trek from Tierra del Fuego to Southern Bolivia undertaken in 1965 by a group of like-minded poets architects designers philosophers and artists including Iommi 1925-2001 the architect Alberto Cruz 1917-2013 sculptor Claudio Girola 1923-1994 French philosopher François Fédier 1935-2021 and numerous others. Many of the participants in this first "Travesia Amereida" had originally coalesced around the surrealist group in post-war Paris and were later responsible for modernizing the faculty and curriculum of the College of Architecture at the Universidad Católico de Valparaíso. In 1971 the group founded an intentional community the "Ciudad Abierta" "Open City" in Ritoque Chile some kilometers southwest of Valparaíso; the community is still in existence and the tradition of the "Travesias" continues with annual journeys through the South American wilderness that become stages for performance poetry readings and art installations. La Ciudad Abierta quoting the editorial introduction to the poem in the Oxford Book of Latin American Poetry ".is probably the only site in the world where architecture is conceived as an outgrowth of poetry" OBLAP p.362ff. First edition.<br /><br />This publication gathered facts and unpublished works of Antonio de Ulloa one of the most relevant scientists and intellectuals of the Spanish Illustration. The present work rescues the mostly ignored brief presence 1776-1778 of this marine scientist in colonial Mexico and his scientific production through his documents: the study titled "Descripción de la Nueva España" and the transcriptions of his private correspondence more than 150 letters with Virrey Antonio Maria Bucarelli archives kept at Real Academia de Historia Madrid and the Archivo General de Indias Sevilla.<br /><br />Antonio de Ulloa 1716-1795 was a Spanish general explorer author astronomer colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. He was born in Seville the son of an economist. Ulloa entered the navy in 1733. In 1735 he was appointed with fellow Spaniard Jorge Juan a member of the French Geodesic Mission a scientific expedition which the French Academy of Sciences was sending to Ecuador to measure a degree of meridian arc at the equator led by Pierre Bouguer. He remained there from 1736 to 1744 during which time the two Spaniards discovered the element platinum. In 1745 having finished their scientific labors Ulloa and Jorge Juan prepared to return to Spain agreeing to travel on different ships in order to minimize the danger of losing the important fruits of their labors. The ship upon which Ulloa was traveling was captured by the British and he was taken as a prisoner to England. In that country through his scientific attainments he gained the friendship of the men of science and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. In a short time through the influence of the president of this society he was released and was able to return to Spain. He published an account of the people and the countries they have met 1748 which was translated into English as A Voyage to South America. He became prominent as a scientist and was appointed to serve on various important scientific commissions. He is to be credited with the establishment of the first museum of natural history the first metallurgical laboratory in Spain and the observatory of Cadiz. In 1758 he returned to South America as governor of Huancavelica in Peru and the general manager of the quicksilver mines there. He held this position until 1764. He arrived on 5 March 1766 in New Orleans to serve as the first Spanish governor of West Louisiana. The French colonists refused to recognize Spanish rule and de Ulloa was expelled from Louisiana by a Creole uprising during the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768. For the remainder of his life he served as a naval officer. In 1779 he became lieutenant-general of the naval forces. As a result of his scientific work in Peru he published Madrid 1784 <i>Relación histórica del viaje á la América Meridional</i> which contains a full accurate and clear description of the greater part of South America geographically and of its inhabitants and natural history. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Back In Mexico He Became A Correspondent For The Nation Separated From His Wife And Became Romantically Involved With Photographer Tina Modotti's Sister Mercedes. In February 1928 Oswald Garrison Villard Editor Of The Nation Sent Beals To Nicaragua To Write A Series Of Articles. He Became Notable As The Only Foreign Journalist Who Interviewed General Augusto Sandino During Nicaragua's 1927-33 War Against Us Military Occupation. In All Beals Wrote Over 200 Magazine Articles For Publications Such As The New Republic And Harper's Magazine. Beals Also Wrote More Than 45 Books Including On History Geography And Travel. Some Of His Books Are Written For A Juvenile Audience. His Autobiography Glass Houses Was Published By J.B. Lippincott Company In 1938. In 1931 Beals Was Awarded The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship For Biographies. His Biography Subjects Included Porfirio Díaz Huey P. Long Roberto De La Selva Stephen F. Austin John Eliot Carrie Nation His Father Was Her Step-Son And Leon Trotsky. During His Career Beals Witnessed Mexican Revolutions Lectured On Shakespeare And Was Held Incommunicado By A Mexican General.10 His Travels Took Him To French Morocco Tunisia Algiers Greece Turkey The Soviet Union Germany And The Caribbean. He Was A Ford Hall Forum Speaker In 1936 And A Member Of The American Committee For The Defense Of Leon Trotsky In 1937. Beals Was A Hero To The Young People Of Cuba. Carlos Mérida 1891 - 1985 Was A Guatemalan Artist And Naturalized Mexican Who Was One Of The First To Fuse European Modern Painting To Latin American Themes Especially Those Related To Guatemala And Mexico. He Was Part Of The Mexican Muralism Movement In Subject Matter But Less So In Style Favoring A Non-Figurative And Later Geometric Style Rather Than A Figurative Narrative Style.
