The show focused on Antonio Manuel's preeminent role in the development of the groundbreaking neo-avant-garde movement that emerged in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s. During the most repressive years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1968-1974) Antonio Manuel's artworks and actions instigated and were many times at the center of controversial debates concerning institutional censorship. While some of his closest friends associated with Tropicalismo and the intellectual milieu of Rio de Janeiro were forced into exile during the military regime, Antonio Manuel managed to remain in Brazil. Throughout this time he created a politically potent and visually striking corpus of experimental work that blended Neoconcrete, Pop, and Conceptual art. Durante gli anni più repressivi della dittatura militare brasiliana (1968-1974), le opere e le azioni di Antonio Manuel hanno istigato e sono state spesso al centro di dibattiti controversi riguardanti la censura istituzionale. Mentre alcuni dei suoi amici più stretti legati al Tropicalismo e all'ambiente intellettuale di Rio de Janeiro furono costretti all'esilio durante il regime militare, Antonio Manuel riuscì a rimanere in Brasile. Apollo's importance in the religion of the Roman state was markedly heightened by the emperor Augustus, who claimed a special affiliation with the god. Contemporary poets variously responded to this appropriation of Phoebus Apollo, both participating in the construction of an imperial symbolism and resisting that ideological project. This book offers a synoptic study of 'Augustan' Apollo in Augustan poetry. Topics explored include the divine self-imaging of late Republican rivals for power, poetic imaginings of Apollo's intervention at the pivotal battle of Actium, how poets 'read' Augustus' new Palatine Temple of Apollo and the deity's role in the reconstituted Saecular Games, and Apollo's key position in the emerging dialectic between poetics - as traditional divine patron of music and literature - and politics - as patron of Augustus.
