The top left corner of the letter is lightly creased with several pinholes where it has been stapled. Folded twice for mailing. Together with a carbon copy of Rugg's reply. Very good. <p>Frank writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teacher's College asking if he can use his name as a reference in applying for a Guggenheim Fellowship. ".My next book I plan and hope will be the one I have always wanted to write and you have always urged me to write: the basic one on The Person - "The Rediscovery of Man." But I shall definitely not be able to afford to do it unless I get some sort of subsidy; wherefore I am applying to the Guggenheim people. May I include you as one of my References together with R. Niebuhr Maritain Lewis Mumford and Alvin Johnson." Frank's book "The Rediscovery of Man: A Memoir and Methodology of Modern Life" was published in New York in 1958.<p>Having been reproached by Frank for being "a bad letter-writer" Rugg replies on October 30 apologizing profusely for having failed to write sooner: "Again and again I ask for forgiveness for my sins of omission.When your letter came I said instantly 'Of course I shall write by return mail and say use my name with the Guggenheim Foundation.' I so hope that you have sent it in even though you haven't heard fro me."<p>Waldo Frank 1889-1967 was an American novelist historian political activist and literary critic. He wrote extensively for The New Yorker and The New Republic during the 1920s and 1930s. He is best known for his studies of Spanish and Latin American literature and culture and his work is regarded as an intellectual bridge between the two continents.<p>Harold Rugg 1886-1981 was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering he went on to study psychology sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920 he took a job at the Columbia University Teacher's College where he stayed until he retired in 1951. 19451665Buenos Aires: Republica Argentina Ministerio de Guerra 1945. Very Good. 33 cm. Typed letter signed by Perón on recto with typed response to his recommendations dated July 30 1945 on verso; corresponding stamps to both sides. Light edgewear; vertical creasing and two rough holes to left margin. A bureaucratic letter from Perón referencing a case brought against an unidentified soldier dressed in civilian clothing who appeared at the home address of one Captain Dumon and either requested or was given 20 pesos for a particular but unstated purpose. The soldier failed to deliver the money to the third party for whom it was intended and the captain filed a complaint with the military authorities; this went to the Auditor General and triggered an investigation. However the captain failed to show up to identify the soldier in question and because the soldier was in civilian clothing the case was referred to civilian authorities.It is not entirely clear to us why Perón was involved in this seemingly minor case but it appears that he was brought in as part of the investigation and that this letter is his department's response. This and other similar other problems amused Lewis Carroll. In this book he depicts the characters and their situations and practices as acting backwards and contrariwise. Yet at the same time several of the characters are engaged in a reasonably normal game of chess. Second edition limited to 500 copies of which this is number 13.<br /><br />José Antonio Villaseñor y Sánchez was an 18th-century geographer historian and mathematician in New Spain. He was born in San Luis Potosí México and studied at San Ildefonso in Mexico City. He became an accountant and later official cosmographer geographer of New Spain. By order of Philip V the viceroy of New Spain Conde de Fuenclara was commanded in 1740 to have a report prepared on the true condition of the provinces of his jurisdiction. He commissioned José Antonio Villaseñor y Sánchez to prepare the report. Villaseñor occupied a number of important posts: official mayor of the Contaduria de Reales Tributos contador general de la azogues and cosmographer of New Spain. He wrote a number of works of mathematical and astronomical interest. The outcome of this commission by Fuenclara was the <i>Theatro Americano descripción general de los reinos y provincias de la Nueva España y sus jurisdicciones</i>. It appeared in two volumes in 1746 and 1748. The first volume contains introductory chapters on pre-Spanish and Spanish history of Mexico followed by a jurisdiction-by jurisdiction description of the archdiocese of Mexico and diocese of Puebla. The second volume continues the description for the diocese of Puebla. The second volume continues the description for the diocese of Michoacán Oaxaca Guadalajara and Durango. The work comprehends a great mass of data regarding the ethnology and population of the Mexican provinces in the mid-18th century. <i>Handbook of Middle American Indians</i>.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated.
