In The 1920S He Was Part Of The Cosmopolitan Group Of Intellectuals Artists And Journalists In Mexico City. He Remained An Active Prolific And Politically Engaged Leftist Journalist And Is The Subject Of A Scholarly Biography. In 1918 He Spent A Brief Period Of Time In Jail As A World War I Draft Evader. Upon Release He Decided To Go See The World And With What Little Money He Had Beals And His Wife Lillian Drove To Mexico. There He Founded The English Preparatory Institute In 1919 Taught At The American High School During 1919 To 1920 And Was On The Personal Staff Of President Carranza 1920. They Left Mexico In 1921 For Europe Where Beals Studied At The University Of Madrid And Then The University Of Rome. Back In Mexico He Became A Correspondent For The Nation Separated From His Wife And Became Romantically Involved With Photographer Tina Modotti's Sister Mercedes. In February 1928 Oswald Garrison Villard Editor Of The Nation Sent Beals To Nicaragua To Write A Series Of Articles. He Became Notable As The Only Foreign Journalist Who Interviewed General Augusto Sandino During Nicaragua's 1927-33 War Against Us Military Occupation. In All Beals Wrote Over 200 Magazine Articles For Publications Such As The New Republic And Harper's Magazine. Beals Also Wrote More Than 45 Books Including On History Geography And Travel. The Historic Centre of Morelia is located in central Mexico at the foot of the Sierra Madre Occidental and near the agricultural valley of Morelia-Querendaro. Built in the 16th century according to a "checkerboard" layout Morelia is an outstanding example of urban development combining town planning theories of Spain and the Mesoamerican experience. Well suited to the slopes of the central hill of the valley its streets follow the original layout. The city has major axes numerous urban squares of which the vast rectangular Zocalo Plaza and gardens that create an open airy ensemble with magnificent vistas of the surrounding hills.The central part of the Historic Centre of Morelia includes 249 monuments of prime importance of which 21 churches and 20 civil constructions which crystallize the architectural history of the city. The sobriety of the urban townscape is enhanced by many Baroque facades characteristic of the religious foundations including the cathedral and the churches of Santa Rosa de las Monjas and Guadelupe. Although the majority of the monuments were erected in the 17th and 18th centuries styles of earlier and later periods Middle Ages Renaissance and Neoclassicism merge in the creation of the "Baroque Moreliano". Together they form a harmonious unity that reinforces the measured use of architectural elements in pink stone the numerous arcades and imposing towers and cupolas covered with azulejos that dominate the city. This publication gathered facts and unpublished works of Antonio de Ulloa one of the most relevant scientists and intellectuals of the Spanish Illustration. The present work rescues the mostly ignored brief presence 1776-1778 of this marine scientist in colonial Mexico and his scientific production through his documents: the study titled "Descripción de la Nueva España" and the transcriptions of his private correspondence more than 150 letters with Virrey Antonio Maria Bucarelli archives kept at Real Academia de Historia Madrid and the Archivo General de Indias Sevilla. Antonio de Ulloa 1716-1795 was a Spanish general explorer author astronomer colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. He was born in Seville the son of an economist. Ulloa entered the navy in 1733. In 1735 he was appointed with fellow Spaniard Jorge Juan a member of the French Geodesic Mission a scientific expedition which the French Academy of Sciences was sending to Ecuador to measure a degree of meridian arc at the equator led by Pierre Bouguer. He remained there from 1736 to 1744 during which time the two Spaniards discovered the element platinum. In 1745 having finished their scientific labors Ulloa and Jorge Juan prepared to return to Spain agreeing to travel on different ships in order to minimize the danger of losing the important fruits of their labors. The ship upon which Ulloa was traveling was captured by the British and he was taken as a prisoner to England. In that country through his scientific attainments he gained the friendship of the men of science and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. In a short time through the influence of the president of this society he was released and was able to return to Spain. He published an account of the people and the countries they have met 1748 which was translated into English as A Voyage to South America. He became prominent as a scientist and was appointed to serve on various important scientific commissions. He is to be credited with the establishment of the first museum of natural history the first metallurgical laboratory in Spain and the observatory of Cadiz. In 1758 he returned to South America as governor of Huancavelica in Peru and the general manager of the quicksilver mines there. He held this position until 1764. He arrived on 5 March 1766 in New Orleans to serve as the first Spanish governor of West Louisiana. The French colonists refused to recognize Spanish rule and de Ulloa was expelled from Louisiana by a Creole uprising during the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768. For the remainder of his life he served as a naval officer. In 1779 he became lieutenant-general of the naval forces. As a result of his scientific work in Peru he published Madrid 1784 Relación histórica del viaje á la América Meridional which contains a full accurate and clear description of the greater part of South America geographically and of its inhabitants and natural history. In collaboration with the Jorge Juan mentioned above he also wrote Noticias secretas de América giving valuable information regarding the early religious orders in Spanish America. A collaborative book-length work combining poetry and conceptual imagery; published anonymously but compiled and edited primarily by Chilean avant-garde poet Godofredo Iommi. "Amereida" a composite neologism for "American Aeneid" is a conceptual chronicle of a literal cross-country trek from Tierra del Fuego to Southern Bolivia undertaken in 1965 by a group of like-minded poets architects designers philosophers and artists including Iommi 1925-2001 the architect Alberto Cruz 1917-2013 sculptor Claudio Girola 1923-1994 French philosopher François Fédier 1935-2021 and numerous others. Many of the participants in this first "Travesia Amereida" had originally coalesced around the surrealist group in post-war Paris and were later responsible for modernizing the faculty and curriculum of the College of Architecture at the Universidad Católico de Valparaíso. In 1971 the group founded an intentional community the "Ciudad Abierta" "Open City" in Ritoque Chile some kilometers southwest of Valparaíso; the community is still in existence and the tradition of the "Travesias" continues with annual journeys through the South American wilderness that become stages for performance poetry readings and art installations. La Ciudad Abierta quoting the editorial introduction to the poem in the Oxford Book of Latin American Poetry ".is probably the only site in the world where architecture is conceived as an outgrowth of poetry" OBLAP p.362ff.
