"The story of two well-to-do Italian families who are engulfed by the impersonal forces of world events. From the late thirties when the teenage youngsters are growing up -- the boys to become involved in anti-Fascist politics the girls to seek marriage -- to the close of the war when the scattered group is reunited in their little town in northern Italy this vivid story carries the stamp of living truth." Ginzburg 1916-1991 has been called "arguably the most important woman writer of post-World War II Italy." This book her first full-length novel following two shorter works published in 1942 and 1949 earned her the prestigious Veillon International literary prize; it was published in England under the title "All Our Yesterdays." Decent copies of both English-language editions are quite scarce. . E.P. Dutton & Co. hardcover books

NOISBN . solid copy very light spotting to covers light shelfwear; jacket rubbed edgeworn small tears and minor paper loss at most corners still quite presentable. "The amazing story of one of the most tragic and one of the most lovely of Italian noble women of the sixteenth century -- a century of cruel and vicious license. At the age of eighteen Beatrice Cenci was imprisoned in a lonely castle by her father and subjected to such treatment that she was led to procure his murder. After a year of precarious freedom in spite of appeals to the Pope for clemency she was arrested tried and put to death." Beatrice's travails have had a long afterlife in art and literature: Percy Bysshe Shelley based his 1819 verse drama "The Cenci: A Tragedy in Five Acts" on the story which has also been adapted for a number of novels plays and operas by the likes of Stendahl Alberto Moravia Antonin Artaud and others. It was also the basis for a 1969 Italian film by Lucio Fulci with Adrienne Larussa as Beatrice which had the charming British release title of "Perversion Story." Per the dust jacket this is a "complete unabridged one-volume edition" having been previously issued by Boni & Liveright in a two-volume edition in 1925. . "Q. Does God's holy law permit rebelliousness against one's temporal Sovereign R. Never indeed condemns it highly; for the sacred writing which as you know is the very word of God declares that the High Official Podesta does not come from God but whoever resists him resists precisely the ordination of God and thus proceeds to damnation." Thus begins Count Monaldo Leopardi's 1776-1847 counter-revolutionary Catechism on Revolutions arguing that Christianity and the French Revolution are incompatible that the rebellion is an ignominious revolt against the metaphysical and social order established by God and that tradition is more important that abstract concepts of liberalism. Meant for use in schools it was one of two essays published by Leopardi in 1832. Two editions were published in 1832 both rather uncommon. This edition without date and publisher but which Sorbelli's "Opuscoli stampe alla macchia e fogli volanti riflettenti il pensiero politico italiano: 1830-1835" dates as 1832 is held by only two libraries: Univ.
