1895100075N. Sarony 1895. 1895. Very good. - An original 4-3/8 inch high by 3 inch wide black & white photograph of the English stage actor John Glendinning by Napoleon Sarony. The image portrays the actor in profile from the knees up attired in a long checkered coat over white shirt and tie an aptly named trilby hat on his head. A pipe is held with its bowl upside down in the tall bearded actor's mouth. The photograph is mounted onto a 6-1/2 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide cream mount with maroon rules. The photographer's credits "From negative copyright 1895 by N. Sarony" are printed on the mount under the photograph and the actor's signature is penned below. There is a tiny chip to the bottom right edge of the mount with 2 perforated holes at the top. Very good. <p>The English actor John Glendinning 1857-1916 made his first appearance at the age of 17 at the Theatre Royal in Greenock Scotland. He performed om New York in "The Ironmaster" and several other plays. He created the role of the Laird in "Trilby". N. Sarony, (1895). unknown

Bulwer-Lytton writes "You do me the honour to wish for my autograph; here it is" and he signs "Lytton/ Torquay/ March 7 1868". The paper was folded once before having been mounted. Good. <p>Edward Bulwer-Lytton 1803-1873 was an English writer who is now largely forgotten. He was the creator of the famous opening line "It was a dark and stormy night". It first appeared in his 1830 novel "Paul Clifford". He coined the phrases "the great unwashed" "pursuit of the almighty dollar" and "the pen is mightier than the sword". 1847100140<p>Southwold April 9th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Over 125 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide creamy white paper. The philologist and author James Jermyn regarding a pamphlet he is about to publish: "Altho you I think have not much opinion of the utility of an English Gradus yet I am inclined to hope that I may be allowed to send you a specimen of the little work." Signed "Jas. Jermyn". Folded for mailing the letter was once likely mounted in an autograph book with remnants of gray paper adhering to the corners of the verso and a strip of paper along one edge of the verso. The words "Philologist & author" are penned in an unknown hand at the top of the letter and "Probably to Dawson Turner" is lightly written in pencil at the bottom. Very good.</p><p>The philologist and author James Jermyn 1773-1852 settled at Southwold where he was appointed collector of the pier dues. He was the author of numerous works and pamphlets including a 12-page pamphlet "Prospectus and Specimen of an English gradus and dictionary of ideas: containing the synonyms epithets and phrases of out language faithfully collected from the great body of English poetry and other authorities" published in 1848.</p> Southwold, April 9th, 1847.

Very good. - Over 15 words penned on her 6-1/8 inch high by 3-7/8 inch wide "Burnham House Finchley Road" stationery with the address and the motto "Ex Una Omnia" surrounding the image of a bird embossed in red at the top. The soprano expresses her "pleasure in complying" with the recipient's request for an autograph. Signed "H. Lemmens-Sherrington". Once folded the note has been mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock which has been clipped from an album. Very good. <p>The English concert and operatic soprano Helen Lemmens-Sherrington 1834-1906 was born in Northern England though she spent much of her early life in Belgium studying at the Brussels Conservatory. Her London debut came in 1856 after having performed throughout Europe. Though she mostly sang roles in concert performances through the earlier part of her career she started appearing in operatic soprano roles in the first half of the 1860's performing at Covent Garden among other leading theaters. She later taught at the Brussels Conservatory as well as London's Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music. July, 1868. unknown

Francis Sylvester Mahony 1804-1866 - Irish priest and journalist who served as the Roman Correspondent for the London Daily News. He also wrote for Fraser's Magazine under the name Father Prout. The Reliques of Father Prout an interesting collection of ballads epigrams satire and classical allusions etc. were first published in 1836 with 18 plates by Maclise. 187096353Circa 1870s. 1870s. Good. - A slip of cream paper approximately 1-3/8 inches high by 2-3/4 inches wide has been signed within a decorative pink frame "Faithfully Yours / W. Morley Punshon." The slip has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of pink paper partially framed in black. There is some glue staining to the slip of paper & the mount and the mount is slightly unevenly cut. Good. <p>William Morley Punshon 1824-1881 was an English Nonconformist Minister. In 1868 he went to Chicago as the representative of the Wesleyan Methodist conference then settled in Canada. During his five years in Canada he did much to advance the cause of his denomination. His preaching and lecturing drew huge crowds both in Canada and the United States. He returned to England in 1873 and was elected president of conference in 1874. An indication of the power of his preaching was the collections raised after his sermons. One of his sermons at the City Road chapel in 1873 raised S2079. Circa [1870s]. unknown
