Engraved collective title separate letterpress title for the Psalms half-title for The Form and Manner of Making. Bishops etc. calendar printed in red and black printed marginalia; full title for the metrical Psalms musical scores. Texts in black letter Gothic. Contemporary reversed calf suede expertly rebacked retaining original backstrip with new gilt morocco lettering piece. Marginal dampstain and erosion at 20 leaves with slight loss at fore-margin calendar leaf C4 recto; mild dampstain at top gutter in later leaves; library stamp at bottom margin leaves N2/N3 in the metrical Psalms. Good or better complete copies of both works. Early edition of what still remains the authoritative version of the Book of Common Prayer comprising the official liturgy of the Anglican Communion and other historically related Christian churches. The first prayer book published in the wake of the English Reformation appeared in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI. That work was revised in 1604 during the reign of James I and again in 1662 during the reign of Charles II. While revision and supplementation has continued into the present era the 1662 edition of which the present copy is essentially an early reprint remains authoritative as the official prayer book of the Church of England. Despite the discrepancy in dates which appear on the title pages of the present edition the Book of Common Prayer and the Psalms of David comprise a single publication as noted at the collective title and confirmed by the signatures. The metrical Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins often bound with the Book of Common Prayer is a separate work. Provenance: Bookplate of the Royal Institution of South Wales noting the gift of Col. Early manuscript shelf-marks to FEP early inscription of Hugh Scott to title page of first mentioned work dampstaining primarily confined to margins of first work more extensive in second. A scarce late seventeenth-century martial manual on the English army line infantry formations. First printed in 1676 the work is primarily devoted to the correct battlefield positioning of pikes and muskets; detailed instruction is provided for the efficient command of personnel in order to maximise damage inflicted and minimise friendly losses. The information is presented in an efficient and remarkably accessible manner the directions for the 'exercise of the musquet' for example are arranged as a list of succinct stages easily comprehended: 'Handle you Charger / Open it with your Teeth / Charge with Powder.' Successive editions each a revision on the last accommodated advances in military technology such as the introduction of flintlock firing mechanisms and the wide-spread employment of the bayonet. This copy is paired with a reissue of the regulations for the conduct of the infantry occasioned by the onset of the Monmouth Rebellion during which the ranks of the English Army swelled in response to the threat of the deposition of James II. . With a loosely inserted letterpress receipt from bookseller Frank Hammond addressed to Lord Cottesloe acknowledging payment of £12 for the book in 1961. The sole edition of a decidedly uncommon news-book account of the actions of the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant - led by veteran Scottish Army officer Alexander Leslie 1st Earl of Leven c.1580-1661 - in the summer of 1645 reporting most particularly on their taking of a royalist garrison within the moated house at Cannon Froome Herefordshire. Following the defeat of a Royalist rebellion against the Covenanting-led Scottish Government in the Spring of 1645 the Scottish army of the Solemn League and Covenant - named after the 1643 treaty between the reforming parliaments in England and Scotland- led by the Earl of Leven marched south to assist their allies. As this news-book reports a 'party of 4500 Horse Foot and Dragoons' en route to Hereford became aware of a Royalist garrison led by 'Governor Colonell Barnold' in the small Herefordshire village of Castle Froome. After the Royalist commander refused to surrender the moated house which had been reinforced with Irish volunteers after the battle of Newark Leven the 'Lieut. Generall.gave order for storming the place'. The heat of the battle is described thus from a purely Roundhead perspective: 'The Grasses were about nine foot deep and as broad and in most places full of water; The Works above the Grasses were so high that all the Ladders we could get were too short; the Enemy behaved themselves valourously but it pleased the Lord to give our Souldiers to much courage that after a hot dispute they were beate from their works after which they fled to the house where they fought desparately till a great part of them were killed. We lost about 16. and 24. are wounded; of the Enemy were killed about 70. Colonell Barnold deadly wounded Captain Briskoe Capt. Houke & thirty others taken Prisoners.' SPLENDID AND UNUSUAL EARLY 19TH CENTURY MARBLED CALF SUMPTUOUSLY GILT WITH RED MOROCCO SPINES covers with gilt borders of two decorative rules and an elegant undulating floral vine flat straight-grain morocco spines very handsomely gilt in compartments with pointillé ground and central circlet from which radiate four lilies and four leaves on twining stems turn-ins gilt with plain and decorative rolls marbled endpapers all edges gilt. With engraved head- and tailpieces and eight engraved portraits. Verso of front free endpaper with armorial bookplate of Baron de Mackau see below; title page with ink ownership inscription of Alexander Paul Ludwig Goupy in a contemporary hand. Brunet II 822; Graesse II 428; Lowndes I 1374. Isolated gatherings with variable browning a small handful rather browned one leaf in first volume with inexpert early repair of four-inch tear letters of four words partly obscured or displaced and the text and facing page somewhat discolored a few additional trivial imperfections internally but the text generally quite fresh and clean. One joint with five small wormholes a few hardly noticeable shallow scratches to covers a hint of wear to extremities but THE LOVELY BINDINGS IN FINE CONDITION with lustrous leather and gilt with only minor wear and with their very considerable original visual appeal entirely intact. This history of "England's Revolutions" begins with the invasion of the Saxons and covers the struggles for the throne of England through the Plantagenets Tudors and Stuarts up to the Restoration and the reign of James II. The learned Jesuit historian Pierre Joseph d'Orléans 1641-98 was described by Voltaire as the first historian to specialize in revolutions--he was also the author of a history of revolutions in Spain an account of the Tartar conquerors of China and a subsequent study of the English Civil War covering the years 1603-90 in depth. The present work was favorably received on both sides of the Channel: the Earl of Chatham commended it in his letters and du Fresnoy described it as a "history written with eloquence and judgment" and praised its equal treatment of Catholics and Protestants. When the present set appeared in a George Bayntun catalogue the bindings were described as "very handsome" and "almost identical to the set of Bertrand De Moleville's 'Histoire de la Révolution de France' 1801-1803 bound by Bozerian" and also from the library of Baron de Mackau 1832-1918 a member of the Chamber of Deputies for 42 years and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. The volumes are unusual in their combination of calf boards with contrasting morocco spines and their gilt decoration is particularly lovely. François Bozerian generally called "Bozerian le jeune" was active in Paris from the turn of the 19th century until 1818 and for much of that time he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude. The Bozerian binderies produced many fine books praised today especially for their technical achievement and elegance of design. The first edition of this work is surprisingly rare in the marketplace: RBH and ABPC record only one other copy at auction since at least 1975. Chez Claude Barbin unknown

Handsomely bound by Gilmour of Salisbury in early nineteenth-century black panelled morocco richly tooled in gilt and blind A.E.G. gilt dentelles. Lightly rubbed some surface loss to upper board. Armorial bookplate of J. L. Jackson with later pencilled inscription 'to Mr. Calcraft. John 1.29. I Thess. v. 23 ' to FEP head of text-block trimmed with occasional loss to running- title small hole to leaf Cc1 with slight loss of text and sense very occasional chipping to margins. A choice example of a Commonwealth era Cambridge-printed King James Bible notorious for its errors from the press of John Field in a finely executed later provincial binding - to a very distinct style - by the Gilmour family Andrew then George of binders and stationers of Salisbury fl.1800 onwards. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences. Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108. Â Â Â Â This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." A portrait of William Fulke precedes the engraved title-page both done by William Marshall.
