With a most unusual contemporary watercolor painting on the fore edge of the book displaying a design of flower and acorns surrounding a central green wreath which encloses the following inscription: "March 13 1665 Martha White Order my Aedes in thy Word ps: 119 " According to Webber in 1001 Fore-edge Paintings p. 12 the earliest date on a fore-edge painting by Lewis is a 1651 Bible now in NYPL dated 1653 on fore-edge and similarily depicts flower animals and a motto. VERY EARLY AND RARE<br /> <br /> Signed by the London firm of Stephen and Thomas Lewis the earliest known bindery to paint both the firm's name and a year directly on the fore-edge paintings. Their fore-edges were typical of the time featuring elements from nature such as flowers animals or birds and they incorporated ofdten a wreath as here with a quote from Scriptures. This copy is additionally enhanced by its contemporary ownership by a woman reader. Provenance: contemporary ownership inscriptions of Martha Reyner "Martha Reyner her Booke with the price 0-18" front flyleaf and "Martha Thompson Her Book Ano Domini 1705 et Praetorum huius drawing of a bird." Endpapers renewed.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> A2-C1 of prelims with marginal corner repair; 5D1-2 NT title and first leaf of Matthew with a few ink blots; 5G2 with ink blot to text obstructing a few letters on recto; 6A-6D with lower corner reinforced to margins; final two leaves of Revelation with loss to border and one letter of text; final leaf soiled and frayed to edges; overall a very nice copy with great margins.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The 1611 King James Bible was printed in a 59-line folio format in 1611 1613 1617 1634 and in 1640/39. The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading "and hee went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. The second edition 1613 She Bible was printed in subsequent years 1613 1617 1634 1640/39 with the variant "and she went into the citie." The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years but most here appear to originate from 1617.</p><p>Arguably the most important book ever published in English. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." 1650778EHB223STDEngland London 1650. Size when opened: 17 x 25 cm. Ivory silk satin richly decorated in a colourful floral design with goldwork metal sequins and clusters of seed pearls the text "voir nostre domine" embroidered on the front and back. Exquisitely embroidered 17th-century English binding with a colourful floral design comparable to the very few silk bindings decorated in London during the years ca. 1625-1650 that have survived. The design which is identical on both sides showcases a crowned Tudor rose with its stem in a vase surrounded by flowers foliage and ornamented leaves with the text "voir nostre domine" at the top. It has been embroidered onto a base of ivory silk satin lined with white linen and decorated with four blue painted ornaments on the interior. The work has been executed with an exquisite pallet of green blue pink red orange white brown and gold threads brilliantly contrasting the ivory white of the base fabric.All sections and shapes have been beautifully outlined with gold thread fastened with red silk. The hearts of the roses the crowns the vases and the initials V and D of the text have been decorated with small pearls. Little round sequins are scattered in the foliage filling the negative space. At the interior two pockets have been sewn intended for the insertion of a book probably a Psalter of ca. 16.5 x 10 cm or 12mo format.Some sections are a little bit faded the embroidery on the spine and around the edges is partly detached missing a few pearls and sequins and likely some goldwork the silk is slightly water stained on the interior. Otherwise an extremely rare specimen of a very richly decorated silk bookbinding in very good condition.l Cf. Begins with <em>The Book of Common Prayer </em>with printed title page 1660 preceded by a full-page engraving of the Royal Arms by Hollar. The entire work is elaborately ruled in red and features wide margins. Engraved title page by Diepenbeeck and Lambart featuring King Solomon on the throne with David Moses and Aaron above. Double page plate of Adam and Eve in the Garden featuring a variety of animals including a unicorn. The second double page plate with vestments and details of the tabernacle. All edges gilt with inner dentelles. </p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> The text is clean and bright appearing unread; Garden of Eden plate mounted to stub with repaired closed tear; Map of Jerusalem with a few short closed tears. Joints in volume 2 cracked but holding firm.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> A very good copy of the popular Restoration Bible celebrating the return of Charles II. The text was first published the previous year by John Field printer to the University of Cambridge who had been commissioned to supply a lectern bible for use in churches and libraries. Former university Vice-Chancellor John Worthington noted that "For a fair large letter large paper with fair margin … there was never such a Bible in being". STC 1896; ESTC S124314. ◆Half a dozen gatherings a little browned occasional mild foxing or small rust spots additional trivial imperfections otherwise an excellent copy clean and very fresh in a pleasing new binding.<br/> <br/> This conversation manual by an Italian teacher based in London offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives and concerns of the wealthier classes in 17th century Europe. An early effort to teach language through dialogue the book is part cultural history part guide to better health and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants with Italian and English text on facing pages. Many of the dialogues begin with phrases that will be familiar to all beginning language students: greeting others selecting items of clothing asking prices or directions ordering food. As the conversations progress they explore various topics that one might expect to encounter in polite society. An early morning exchange between master and servant evolves into a discussion of the importance of sleep the optimal amount of sleep for good health and the significance of dreams. A dialogue that begins with ordering meals leads to an involved colloquy about the benefits and disadvantages of fasting and abstinence; the virtues and defects of bread butter meat dairy and eggs; diet recommendations for the healthy and the sick; the best diet for each season; and the importance of a walk after dinner. Other dialogues include advice for travellers observations on the political situation and life at court and finally a discussion of that most eternally fascinating topic: love. This work is of continuing interest and value to linguists as it documents the Benevento Italian dialect which is in need of preservation. This edition contains the famous reading "breeches" in Genesis Chapter III verse 7 which first appeared in 1579. Although Barker's imprint on title of this edition reads "Printer to the Queenes most excellent Majestie" the colophon reads "Printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie" as James I had ascended in March 1603. Bound by "Owen" in contemporary full black morocco richly gilt all over with floral and leaf motifs onlaid red and citron morocco pieces to covers and spines a.e.g. fore-ege painted with flowers and "Search the Scriptures" two working silver clasps joints beautifully repaired fore-edge painting dulled and worn from clasps some foxing throughout. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Suitable for exhibition and study. OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH RESTORATION BOOKBINDING: AN UNRECORDED AND UNPUBLISHED BINDING BY "OWEN" WHOSE WORK IS KNOWN FROM ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE. <br /> <br /> In terms of 17th-century English bindings this one in particular is of particular significance: the only other binding by "Owen" is in the Henry Davis Gift British Library. Howard Nixon English Restoration Bookbindings p. 37 and plate 78 describes it in some detail: "It has been stated earlier that signatures on painted fore-edges followed by the word 'fecit' in the seventeenth century are those of binders or booksellers for whom the books were bound. The book in the Henry Davis Gift with the edges signed 'Owen fecit' and dated 1672 is a possible exception to this rule as Owen cannot be traced. The tools used on this book have not however been identified elsewhere." Our binding is far more elaborate the that in the Henry Davis Gift as it features a total of 26 onlays red and citron all elaborately gilt. The Davis Gift example is bound in a single piece of black goatskin. Due to the extensive and complex gold tooling the present binding was not easily attributable to a known workshop but it is now clear that all four major tools on it are identical to those on the "Owen" binding in the Davis Gift see Mirjam Foot Henry Davis Gift vol. II no. 115 with full-page reproduction. While the fore-edge of our binding is worn the word "Search the Scriptures" is just visible alongside depictions of flowers. <br /> <br /> Provenance: inscribed on recto of third blank leaf "John Pounds Carter 1864 bequeathed to him by his aunt Phoebe who died July 14th 1852." This individual was almost certainly the same JPC who was born in Southwark London in 1821 and died in Lambeth London in 1896. Tipped onto the first blank is a small handwritten note which describes this as a "very fine binding by Samuel Mearne." <br /> <br /> References: Ad 1 Bible: Darlow/Moule 539 British and Foreign Bible Society copy lacks the Psalms altogether. Dryden dubbed Robert Wild 1609-79 "the Wither of the City" after hearing the Financial District's workers' enthusiastic reception of the title poem here which celebrates General Monck's successful campaign to restore Charles II to the throne: "I have seen them reading it in the midst of 'Change so vehemently that they lost their bargains by their candles' ends." Our collection contains several of Wild's most notable works including "The Recantation of a Penitent Proteus" satirizing Puritan clergy who had conformed to the Anglican Church; "The Loyal Nonconformist" professing his loyalty to the monarchy but maintaining his Puritan religious views; and "The Fair Quarrel" an attack on the 1665 Five Mile Act designed to drive nonconformist ministers out of their parishes. Wild was something of a paradox: he could preach a hellfire Puritan sermon but also write verse sufficiently scandalous to be mistakenly attributed to the notorious libertine John Wilmot Earl of Rochester. Our volume was loaned by Richard Jennings for the celebrated 1947 London Exhibition of First and Early Editions of English Poetry catalogued by John Hayward. Third edition in English of Higo Grotius' foundational work on international law. Folio bound in full contemporary paneled calf with a burgundy morooco spine label lettered in gilt title page printed in red and black added engraved title by T. Cross Senior bound opposite the printed title page. Translated into English by William Evats. In good condition. Armorial bookplate and period ownership signature. A pre-eminent contributor to international legal doctrine Hugo Grotius was an influential Dutch jurist philosopher and theologian. In this momentous work Grotius describes situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines principles for the use of force. Though based on Christian natural law Grotius advances the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he points to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. Barksdale's translation the first in English includes an original biographical sketch of Grotius. This edition "is perceived to be part of a larger movement in England aimed partly at setting out an ideological alternative to reformation proposals under discussion and to clarifying the relations between civil and ecclesiastical authority in England" Butler xii. Bound in full 20th century mottled calf. Plain new endpapers. 4 raised bands to spine blind decorations to compartments. Board edges patterned. Black and gilt label & titles to spine. All title pages present. Final 3 pages Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book So ends at page 92. All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel; f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age there are also tiny tears nicks and edgewear and a general darkening of the pages nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only if at all so these are actually leaf numbers so we refer to fn. To confuse matters further the book of psalms numbers each page not leaf. Old and New Testament bound together without the Apocrypha in early 19th century gold- and blind-stamped straight-grained full brown morocco. The binding is signed stamped "Bound by Hering 9 Newman St" which could be any of the several members of the Hering family of London. All page edges are coated in thick gilt a.e.g. Bound in after the preface are eighteen leaves of the Genealogies of Holy scripture and a sheet containing a map of Canaan with a table on the reverse by J.S. John Speed. These 38 pages are hand-numbered in red ink with some underlining and notations and one leaf had a torn corner with loss repaired in blank. M6 with repair to margin and Aa5 with repair to margin on lower corner. Title page with small tear to the lower gutter. Minor foxing scattered lightly throughout text minor soiling to some page edges and some small spots of staining to the page edges. Printed in two columns. Octavo 8vo with height measuring 6 13/16" or 172mm. Unpaginated; A-I8 K-T8 V8 X-Z8 Aa-Ii8 Kk-Mm8 Nn7 Yy4-8 Zz8 Aaa-Iii8 Kkk-8. Previous owner's writing dated 1685 "washed" off of the top of M5 and the verso of the New Testament title page. Quarto modern full brown calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $3200.Original manuscript from the late 17th century with the parliamentary impeachment proceedings against 14 individuals during the reign of Charles II.The accountswritten in legible script with an index at frontbegin with the proceedings against Viscount Mordaunt charged with raping the daughter of the surveyor of Windsor Castle when Mordaunt was the castle's constable. Although they include a number of cases including that of William Penn in 1668 the clear focus is on the Popish plot a supposed conspiracy promulgated in 1678 that led to the arrest and trial of five Catholic lordsBaron Arundell the Marquess of Powis Baron Belasyse Baron Petre and Viscount Staffordall of which are recounted in this manuscript. As anticatholic hysteria waned and it became increasingly clear that the ""plot"" was a fiction the fallout entrapped more of the players: the impeachment of William Scroggs who served as the Chief Justice during the trials is detailed as is that of the Lord High Treasurer the Earl of Danby who was charged with concealing the plot and Edward Fitzharris who had attempted to implicate Danby in Sir Edmondbury Godfrey's murder in 1678 an event which fanned the flames of anticatholic hysteria. Spine rather rubbed and darkened and sometime furbished worn at ends and joints just starting to crack at head. The second edition of Fulke’s tendentious and influential comparison of the Douay-Rheims and Bishops’ translations of the New Testament with his notes and commentary intended to refute the arguments on which the former version was based. Fulke’s work with the two texts in parallel columns the Catholic in roman type and the Church of England version in italic sold better in England than the Douai Bible ever had bringing its language to a wider readership and becoming indirectly responsible for its influence on the coming King James version. A choice example of a Commonwealth era Cambridge-printed King James Bible notorious for its errors from the press of John Field in a finely executed later provincial binding - to a very distinct style - by the Gilmour family Andrew then George of binders and stationers of Salisbury fl.1800 onwards. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'.
