33395Gielgud makes reference to the play he is touring "Dear Octopus" by Dodie Smith. He also mentions Emyln Williams' play "The Corn is Green" that is touring with Williams and Dame Sybil Thorndyke. Most of the letter concerns a possible production of Our Town. Gielgud wonders if the play should be done with an American cast or rewritten for an English one. Asks for a script and contact information for Wilder etc. A terrific letter. unknown books

Hinckley active as a wood engraver in Philadelphia between 1845 and 1857 see Dictionary of American Artists Yale 1975. English an editor and prolific author of poetry and prose composed the poem "Ben Bolt" and wrote a play entitled The Mormons. But he is perhaps best remembered for the fistfight that ended his friendship with Poe. This resulted from the public scandle revolving around letters sent to Poe by Elizabeth Ellett and Frances Sargent Osgood. "This association with Poe remains the chief source of scholarly interest in English. Their war of words figures as a major event in biographies of Poe and English's account of the poet have provided valuable information about Poe's sensitivity to alcohol and the possibility of his drug use" American National Biography.
