Edition originale tirée à 458 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci un des rares exemplaires hors-commerce entiérement imprimé sur papier Japon, justifié ''exemplaire d'auteur'', il renferme l'état définitif des 17 eaux-fortes, accompagné de 2 états de toutes ces eaux-fortes, dont un avec remarques, et le bandeau gravé à l'eau-forte pour le feuillet preliminaire d'avant-propos, accompagné de 2 états (soit un total de 54 eaux-fortes tirées sur papier Japon). Remarquable reliure japonisante de Paul Vié composée de deux papiers cuirs différents aboutés au dos de l'ouvrage et présentant chacun, autour d'un décor de motifs géométriques, deux paysages. Cette iconographie aux paysages est, à notre connaissance, d'une grande rareté. La majeure partie des papiers cuirs japonisants présente soit des éléments purement décoratifs, des objets, des animaux ou des motifs végétaux. L'adjonction d'une esthétique japonisante sur un ouvrage concernant le Maroc pourrait paraître incongrue, ce qu'elle n'est pas car il y a là notamment un rappel de l'attrait de Pierre Loti pour le Japon. Ce dernier séjourna cinq ans avant dans le pays du Soleil-Levant, où il épousa une jeune Japonaise. Deux romans en suivirent, ""Madame Chrysanthème"" et ""Japoneries d'automne"", tous deux publiés juste avant ""Au Maroc"". Par ailleurs, le présent exemplaire a sans doute appartenu à Madeleine Burty, la fille du critique d'art Philippe Burty, dont on sait le rôle joué pour la diffusion du japonisme. Madeleine Burty fut l'épouse du faïencier Charles de Haviland. L'exemplaire est enrichi d'un dessin aquarellé de la structure décorative d'une babouche marocaine avec une indication détaillée des couleurs. Nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'identifier l'auteur de ce dessin, mais il n'est pas impossible que ces indications aient servi pour un décor de faïence de la maison Haviland ; quelques piqûres sur les premiers feuillets et la tranche latérale, bel exemplaire. Majestically illustrated by Foujita with numerous colour in-texte and full page format drawings each pasted delicately on the paper. <br /> A very good or better example of this scarce precious and much sought after work. Of the entire edition 55 copies were printed on Japon Imperial of which 25 are numbered 1-25 25 lettered A-Z with an original eau forte & 5 H-C. In addition 65 copies were printed on Hollande Van Gelder of which 50 are numbered 26-75 & 15 H-C. 425 copies were printed on Arches of which 400 are numbered 76-475 & 25 H-C. This lovely copy is example # 149 is therefore one of the 400 of 425 copies on Arches. Total copies all papers 545: 55 Japon 65 Holland 425 Arches <br /> <br /> A very Good copy indeed.
