With a full page engraved portrait of Ambrose by Carlo Gregori 1719-1759 before the title red and black title page with an elaborate printer's mark with puti doing things to various printing implements. 2 large folios in full parchment of the time with gilt stamped titles on the spines engraved initials nicely printed. Red marbled edges. Stiff parchment covers are normally worn boards slightly bowed top of spines pulled with some vellum chipped away some cracking of the parchment at the edges. Interiors have institutional stamps from a monastery in Philadelphia along with a personal stamp from a Pennsylvania theologian some minor foxing and aging but otherwise clean and strong. Surprisingly hard to find in commerce no auction records in the last 70 years. Ambrogio Travesari 1386-1439 was an Italian monk and great proponent of papal supremacy. But he is particularly interesting because he became convinced that the knowledge and wisdom of the Greek fathers was important to the modern church and he decided to learn Greek so that he could read them in the original. He worked with a Byzantine refugee from Constantinople for 10 years translating Basil Athanasius Gregory of Nazianzus and of course John Chrysostom among others. As a result of his great respect for the Greek fathers he attempted to bring the Eastern and Western churches together at least to mediate the differences. "He supported the pope at Ferrara and Florence and worked hard in the attempt to reconcile the Eastern and Western Churches. Bt in this council and later in that of Florence Ambrose by his efforts and charity toward some poor Greek bishops greatly helped to bring about a union of the two Churches the decree for which 6 July 1439 he was called on to draw up. Segunda edición del "Arte o cartilla del nuevo beneficio de la Plata" publicado por primera vez en Lima en 1738 donde se describen las minas del Perú y se explica el nuevo beneficio que consiste en el empleo de la colpa o caparrosa en lugar del magistral consiguiendo no solo un ahorro de costo por el escaso precio y abundancia de la primera comparado con el del segundo sino también y principalmente por el consumo menor de azogue y un rendimiento mayor de plata o "aumento de ley". Explica como se ha de hacer el beneficio con el nuevo ingrediente en las diferentes clases de metales y termina doliéndose de la indiferencia con que se ha mirado este asunto en el pasado. Sus maestros según él mismo dice habÃan sido 25 años de trabajo y experiencia estudiando en casi todos los metales conocidos en el reino del Perú y empleando el servicio de muchas y diferentes minas entre ellas las famosas de Nuestra Señora de la Regla y la de San Juan de Lucanas donde habÃa sido minero azoguero beneficiador y al final dueño de la mina. La segunda obra del volumen el "Resumen del arte" impreso por Zúñiga el mismo año es un compendio del "Arte o cartilla" del mismo autor. "Este resumen es solamente dar a los dueños de minas de los reynos del Perú y Nueva España las reglas prácticas que deben observar en el nueo methodo de beneficio de la plata". Laurentius Lorenzo Scupoli um 1530 - 28. November 1610 in Neapel ein italienischer katholischer Priester und Mitglied des Ordens der Theatiner war ein aszetischer Schriftsteller. Er trat 1569 in den Orden der Theatiner ein und wurde 1577 zum Priester geweiht. Verleumdet wurde er 1585 in den Laienstand versetzt in dem er einsam lebend sein Werk "Il combattimento spirituale" i.e. "Der geistliche Kampf" Erstausgabe 1589 verfaßte. Es wurde von Franz von Sales geschätzt in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt und erlebte bis in die Neuzeit zahlreiche Auflagen. Octavo. 79pp. Rebound in modern 3/4 pebbled dark brown leather over grey paper boards with gilt lettering motifs and raised bands on the spine. <br /> <br /> This scarce work is a history of the Teatro dei Rozzi in Siena Italy. The prestigious live theater venue and community originally founded as the "Congrega dei Rozzi" Congregation of Rozzi in 1531 was created for performances of poetry and drama and made significant contributions to the local developments of these artforms over the centuries. The theater notably held performances of works by dramatists such Girolamo Gigli 1660- 1722 Pietro Fortini d.1562 and Iacopo Angelo Nelli 1673-1767. It truly established itself as a prominent cultural and educational institution of Siena by when it established the Academy of the Rozzi in 1690. The title page states that the author of the work is Lorenzo Ricci a merchant of old books that it is directed to dedicated to a Mr. Lottinj a Parisian printer and that the book was printed in Paris. In the years since historical and bibliographic scholarship have identified Ricci as a pseudonym of Italian scholar historian and politician Giovanni Antonio Pecci 1693-1768 of Siena where the book was actually published. Although not identified the publisher printer is believed to be Moreni. The half-title page in this copy contains period manuscript notes in ink in Italian.<br /> <br /> Text throughout in Italian with an additional preface in French.<br /> <br /> Binding with minor rubbing to extremities including light rubbing to the hinges. Interior with some minor smudges and few light water stains throughout although the pages are overall quite clean. Dated signature of a previous owner in pencil on the front free endpaper. Esemplare genuino e in buono stato seppur lievemente corto di margini. Piccole lacerazioni sul frontespizio a ridosso della cucitura del fascicolo e a lato del colophon. Maggiormente ricordato oggi come favolista e letterato Pignotti fu valente scienziato e detenne la cattedra di Fisica dal 1774 al 1802 nell'ateneo pisano. In queste Congetture dedicate al funzionamento del barometro e all'evaporazione l'autore prese in esame il dibattito scientifico dell'epoca sull'argomento le Roy Franklin Bernoulli Priestley Leibnitz e propose una propria interpretazione di questi fenomeni e delle cause dei terremoti e delle eruzioni favorendo la teoria del flogisto e confutando la tesi delle cause elettriche delle scosse telluriche. The work is unusual in that all his writings are cited with their first place of publication and date. Subscriptions of 50 soldi of Milanese money are solicited for which subscribers will receive a free copy. This prospectus was written by Bianchi's contemporary :Lorenzo Manini a reformer himself and correspondent of Benjamin Franklin.</p> <br /> <p>Educated by the Jesuits in Cremona and taking holy orders in 1756 Isidoro Bianchi 1731-1808 showed an aptitude for language and studied Greek and Latin with an emphasis on antiquarian studies. His skill was recognized and he was invited to the monastery of Saint Gregory in Rome where he began corresponding with many of the Italian intellectuals of the day including such luminaries as Beccaria Pietro and Alessandro Verri and Joseph Baretti. In the 1760's he was influenced by enlightenment ideas and became a contributor and supporter of the Milanese periodical l Café and his connections with reform movements in Italy became of paramount importance to him. He became involved with the Florentine periodical edited by Giovanni Lami La Novelle Letterarie and the Venetian publication La Minerva. This brought him into conflict with his superiors and he was sent from Rome to Gubbio where he was instructed to meditate on his calling to holy orders and his commitment to the Church. This period of exile strengthened his resolve and he dedicated his life to helping to create a society where the happiness of mankind was the central focus of government and individual freedom was the goal of everyman. This was to take the form of economic justice for artisans and peasants and culminated in the radical idea of distribution of land and property to those who produced the goods and services that geneated the wealth in Italian society.</p> <br /> <p>To learn more about this fascinating writer and thinker see Franco Venturi's biographical sketch cited below.
