1827007797Napoli: Stamperia Real 1827. First Edition. Quarter Morocco. Very Good. A glorious memorial to the fun-loving Bourbon Neapolitan court of the day. Folio 33.5 by 23.5 cm. 19 1 pp. followed by 11 hand-colored plates and 220 cm long concertina or leporello depicting a procession of sorts or perhaps a frieze of the masqueraders 84 in all and all of whom are hand-colored figures. Below the line-up of dancers on the frieze are nine separate excerpts of musical notation. Eight of these are for various quadrilles with the title of the particular dances above the bars of music. The ninth music quotation is for a Persian march its participants the ones depicted in the eleven larger plates. The actual people at the masquerade and represented by the illustrations are listed and keyed in the text portion. The names are rich in the titled and the English are also well-represented with a few familiar names such as Acton among them. Contemporary binding both leather spine and paper pastedown on boards fairly heavily rubbed. Light foxing throughout. Repaired closed tear repair on frieze. The concertina is folded in an unusual manner and thus requires care when opening it up. Hand-colored figures are all bright. Stamperia Real unknown

An animated and rare 1833 broadsheet attack on the political beliefs and actions of Lorenzo de Zavala one of the foundational figures of the Texas Republic. Zavala was a prominent liberal Mexican politician who helped to draft the Constitution of 1824 and served as president of Congress and Secretary of Finance. In 1829 he began investing in Texan lands thus beginning his close involvement in Texas. When this document was issued Zavala was serving as Governor of the State of Mexico. <br /> <br /> The present address styled as an open letter to Mexican president Santa Anna and dated June 1 1833 from Tlalpan was authored by conservative General Gabriel Durán who makes a vehement attack on Zavala's patriotism and character urging Santa Anna to cut ties with Zavala completely. In translation Duran urges the Mexican president to defend "The State of Mexico oppressed and degraded by an impious audacious and insolent faction.that took by assault the sovereign executive powers enabling Lorenzo Zavala a famous criminal despised in general by the nation." In order to "Sustain the sovereignty of the nation in spite of the violent jolt and ill-fated attacks of the anarchy" Duran offers Santa Anna the military support needed to halt "A schism and the violation of our sacred religion and the restlessness of proprietors of being despoiled of their properties will be forever dissipated." He completes his address by offering an eight-point plan to "annul the elections where de Zavala was triumphant" and to regain power in the region surrounding Mexico City.<br /> <br /> Durán's message was not at first heeded by Santa Anna who appointed Zavala as Minister to France in October 1833. However in reaction to Santa Anna's dictatorial proclivities Zavala resigned his position in 1834 and never returned to Mexico. He settled in Texas in 1835 when it was on the cusp of revolution and helped to draft the Texas Constitution before serving as the Republic's first Vice President. Exiled from Mexico in 1830 Zavala came to New York to seek colonization for his empresario grants in southeastern Texas transferring his interests to the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. "From December 1832 until October 1833 he again served as governor of the state of Mexico before returning to the Congress as a deputy for his native state of Yucatán. Named by President Antonio López de Santa Anna in October 1833 to serve as the first minister plenipotentiary of the Mexican legation in Paris he reported to that post in the spring of 1834. When he learned that Santa Anna had assumed dictatorial powers in April of that year Zavala denounced his former ally and resigned from his diplomatic assignment. Disregarding Santa Anna's orders to return to Mexico City he traveled to New York and then to Texas where he arrived in July 1835. From the day of his arrival he was drawn into the political caldron of Texas politics. Although he first advocated the cause of Mexican Federalism within a few weeks he became an active supporter of the independence movement; he served in the Permanent Council and later as the representative of Harrisburg in the Consultation and the Convention of 1836. At the convention he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence along with Jose Francisco Ruiz Jose Antonio Navarro and fifty-six other delegates" Handbook of Texas. <br /> <br /> The present work described his journey and impressions of the United States during his visit from 1830-1831 and was published while stationed in Paris in 1834. Raines praises the work as "One of the few books of travel in the U.S. worth reading. A fine picture of American manners customs and institutions by a Mexican republican with some notice of Austin's colonization in Texas . A true patriot and uncompromising lover of liberty" Raines. <br /> <br /> The work is further noted as "an incredibly important although little known.meticulously written narrative about the democratic culture and institutions of the United States. Zavala's narrative not only stands as a major document of early Mexican-American letters but also as one of the first theoretical and ethnographic examinations of democracy as a political and cultural institution. Thus Zavala's book challenges the widespread acceptance by American scholars that Alexis de Toqueville's Democracy in America 1835 is the first book to take United States democracy as a focus of political and cultural study . REPUBLICAN SPAIN COLLAPSES ERODING SPANISH DOMINION OVERSEAS: A WEIRD AND VERY LITTLE-KNOWN DIATRIBE CONCERNING THE 1820 SPANISH ELECTION SCANDAL INVOLVING LATIN-AMERICAN BORN REPRESENTATIVES IN THE NEWLY REFORMED SPANISH PARLIAMENT "CORTES OF CÃDIZ. This issue fueled the debate on the future of the former Spanish colonies in the Americas which openly advocated independence -- as here. <br /> <br /> In 1820 the provisional Cortes of Cádiz election board limited to 30 the number of Latin-American born substitute deputies which led to strong criticism across the Atlantic. Particular outrage was expressed by those born in the Americas and who had been summoned to Spain to elect the aforementioned substitutes on May 28 and 29 1820 an event which occasioned the present pamphlet. While the present text is more than 200 years old its venomous spew reminds us of more recent claims of "election fraud." The first paragraph of this "Manifesto on the Nullity of the Elections" conveys the foaming nonsensical language throughout:<br /> <br /> "The crazy or drunk populace often shout in the excess of their delirium: 'Long live our death Perish our life!' This sublime concept of Dante is the most faithful depiction of the power of seducers over the common imbecile. A strong genius a strong character an ambition without limits are the weapons with which an impostor attracts to his party a large number of weak spirits of little people. With the examples with modern and ancient history he presents the master of our political works. We do not need this to happen to know this truth to ancient or alien events. We continually see iniquitous men who disturb the internal peace of states and who sacrifice the most sacred rights of their compatriots for petty interests. Monster enemies of society you had to have a thousand heads and even then your blood would not compensate for the horrendous evil that your greed caused! What a horrible compromise in which the imprudence of a few American Spaniards constitutes me!"<br /> <br /> And finally the last paragraph which in its rhythmic desparation reminds us of Ginsburg's "Howl":<br /> <br /> "When America screams without her voices dissipating either by distance or the seas asking for help from her own children; when she presents them with her hands in manacles her feet in chains; when she discovers the aged and deep sores that her fanaticism and tyranny caused on her delicate body; when she stretches out her arms to rest on the chest of the beings she produced and to recover from the spirits that are beginning to fail her ah! She is neglected despised insulted. Lorenzo Dow 1777 1834 was an eccentric itinerant American preacher. He was an important figure in the Second Great Awakening. He was also a successful writer. His autobiography at one time was the second best-selling book in the United States exceeded only by the Bible. Dow's enthusiasm sustained him through the incessant labors of more than 30 years during which he preached in almost all parts of the United States. A fierce abolitionist Dow's sermons were often unpopular in the southern United States. His later efforts were directed chiefly against the Jesuits; indeed he was in general a vigorous opponent of Roman Catholicism. In a cloth binding. Externally there is almost no wear to the extremities. Internally the pages have browning that becomes significant to the first and last few pages and scattered spots. There is chipping and small closed tears to the first and last few pages with loss to pages 161-164 as shown above. Very Good J. Byrne hardcover

The text block is cracked at the center. Sporadic foxing throughout. The large folding map is present at the rear of the volume and is in nice clean condition. All plates present. The announced purpose of Sitgreaves' expedition was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado and to examine the territory en route. Wheat described the large folding map as follows: "All in all this map is a monumental achievement and while it is marred with misspellings such as "Butles for Buttes it is generally correct and exceedingly well done." One mammoth sized reverse glass albumen photo 14 x 22.2 in. photographer’s imprint w/in negative at lower corner in contemporary decorative Arts & Crafts frame very minor tidemark faintly darkening upper left corner wooden frame w/ minor scuffing a VG exemplar w/ bright strong contrast. Baker’s Art Gallery first founded by Lorenzo Baker 1834-1924 during the Civil War produced innumerable family portraits commercial images photographs of famous people and during the 1890’s a series of reverse glass albumen mammoth images. In this image the globe being studied by the young pair appears to be an 18 inch Rand McNally terrestrial globe with the young boy seated atop the desk and a Renaissance revival chair behind the flowing gown of the young girl. Celebrities who sat for the Bakers included Annie Oakley Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes William McKinley Theodore Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding. Four generations of the Baker family operated the studio in Columbus until 1955 when the studio closed and family donated negatives and photographs to the Ohio History Center. Many ships of the Royal Navy were named from Greek and Roman mythology during the Napoleonic Wars. Lord Sandwich the First Lord of the Admiralty had a copy of this book on his desk and simply plucked a name from within. First edition with "32d Congress 2d Session." on title page and Robert Armstrong listed as the publisher. Dark green boards with blind stamped imprint on cover and rear and somewhat faded gilt lettering on spine. Slight shelf wear to edges with fraying to head and tail of spine; corners bumped; mild soiling. Binding is tight. Interior has foxing and toning throughout but is still very readable. Small sticker with number on front pastedown. There are 79 plates present as called for first is folding. However as is common with this printing bird plate 2 is missing and there is an extra botanical plate that is not listed. The folding map titled "Reconnaissance of the Zuni Little Colorado and Colorado rivers" is laid in and measures about 47 x 27 ½ inches. Map is in good condition with a large chip missing from one side; light toning; and numerous small closed tears where folds intersect. Overall a nice complete copy of an important piece of Western American history. Following the Mexican Cession of 1848 there was strong interest in mapping the United States' newly acquired territory. In 1851 Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves a U. S. Army officer in the Corps of Topographical Engineers led a scientific and military mission to explore the area's largest rivers and determine their navigability. The party of more than 50 people set out from Zuni Pueblo in northern New Mexico traveled west across Arizona and then followed the Colorado River south to California. This report to the U. S. Senate recounts the treacherous journey interactions with Native Americans and describes the various flora and fauna they encountered.
