In good condition only in contemporary full sheep with black morocco spine label worn. Leather dry and worn with some discoloration to front board. Mild internal foxing though the contents are generally clean. Contemporary writing to endpapers and there is a sticker to front paste-down and a pocket to the rear paste-down though positively no indication of this having ever been a library book. Unusual gathering of three Wisconsin-related "General Orders" issued in 1862 1863 and 1864 all issued from the Adjutant General's Office at the War Department in Washington DC as follows: General Orders No. 217 30 December 1862 1p Notes three miscellaneous actions for three individual servicemen the last of which involves 2d Lieutenant Samuel B. Morse of the 7th Wisconsin Volunteers who resigned before the order dismissing him. General Orders No. 11 10 January 1863 1p dismissing Colonel R.C. Murphy of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteers from the Army "for allowing his command to be surprised at Holly Springs Mississippi without having taken proper steps to protect his post or repulse the enemy and his troops having been found in bed at the time of attack." General Orders No. 211 15 June 1864 1p text of a Congressional resolution "tendering the thanks of Congress to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey of the 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. for distinguished services in the recent campaign on the Red River by which the gunboat flotilla under Rear Admiral David D. Porter was rescued from imminent peril." General Orders were usually made in modest quantities for distribution to the various army commands where the company clerks would collect them hence the occasional file holes. 1839876Middleborough Plymouth County 1839. <p>8vo. 185 x 155 mm. 6 x 7 ¼ inches .Manuscript in ink. 89 pp. Marbled boards calf spine. Cover and corner wear some cover separation few pages torn. Text written in legible hand.</p> <br /> <p>Accounts of a farmer from the town of Middleborough which show entries ranging from purchased foodstuffs to money received for work mowing and plowing fields and cutting and delivering cords of wood. These accounts show the date the work or item and the payment. Several notes reveal that farmhands moved onto the property at various times: "1844 William Tinkham moved in to my house. Novem 4th 1842 William Carter moved into my house." There is a record of payment for work performed by temporary employees of farm in Middleborough.</p> <br /> <p>There are a few pages which indicate that the farmer whose name is not shown may be Lorenzo Wood 1792-1860. One page shows "A. Dearborn & Co. to Lorenzo Wood to fourteen cords of oak wood delivered at the depot in Middleboro at four dollars and a half. October 30 1847." A tantalizing note near the end of the book reads: "Joshua Wood Esq. Newport RI Mariah Wood Ichabod Lorenzo Leonard P. Wood Lorenzo Wood" with no further explanation but perhaps provides some indication of the origins of this family.</p> <br /> <p>A few names of customers include Zenubble Pratt Luen Perry Col. Charles Soule Ira Tinkham and Capt. Sylvanus Warren likely 1785-1872. Middleborough incorporated in 1669 was once called the shoe capital of the world. In 1850 it had less than 6000 residents.</p> . unknown

189658137Columbus OH: Baker’s Art Gallery 1896. One mammoth sized reverse glass albumen photo 14 x 22.2 in. photographer’s imprint w/in negative at lower corner in contemporary decorative Arts & Crafts frame very minor tidemark faintly darkening upper left corner wooden frame w/ minor scuffing a VG exemplar w/ bright strong contrast. Baker’s Art Gallery first founded by Lorenzo Baker 1834-1924 during the Civil War produced innumerable family portraits commercial images photographs of famous people and during the 1890’s a series of reverse glass albumen mammoth images. In this image the globe being studied by the young pair appears to be an 18 inch Rand McNally terrestrial globe with the young boy seated atop the desk and a Renaissance revival chair behind the flowing gown of the young girl. The others marketed from about 1896-1900 included a mother and two daughters “The Recital†and another image of young girl with mother painting and holding an artist’s palette all seemingly with same models. Celebrities who sat for the Bakers included Annie Oakley Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes William McKinley Theodore Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding. Four generations of the Baker family operated the studio in Columbus until 1955 when the studio closed and family donated negatives and photographs to the Ohio History Center. A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow’s trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman and defended his right to have multiple “wives†as a matter of religious freedom. This copy with “From the Author†on the top margin of the title wrap apparently presented as a gift from Curtis. For the Author unknown

Small NY State Library stamp on the margin of the first page with a small withdrawal stamp in the margin of the last. Some soiling to the outer leaves. <br /> <br /> Announces a convention to be held at Cincinnati on May 19 1868 and promotes Lorenzo Sherwood's candidacy for President. The League was an attempt to combat the railroad monopoly and thereby to reduce fares for freight. Sherwood 1810-1869 a legislator lawyer abolitionist and political nonconformist spent 10 years in Texas prior to the Civil War working as an attorney representing shipping and freight concerns. The outset of the war found him in New York on business where he stayed. An outspoken abolitionist and advocate of extreme versions of Reconstruction including military occupation of the South he was a notable figure of the time. Much of the text here consists of newspaper extracts many from the Washington Great Republic touting the organization activities and Sherwood's candidacy. Oxford American National Biography. Caption title Good to Very Good. <br /> <br /> Sherwood and his National Cheap Freight Railway League seek "to lessen the cost of transportation" by breaking up "the monopoly system" and pattern of "exclusive privilege" that have oppressed small business and farmers and by opening the railway network "to free competition in transportation." They also support government subsidies for "a railroad to unite the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile and Pensacola with the lakes at Cleveland and Chicago." <br /> The League's membership roster which includes many members of Congress is printed. The pamphlet includes a Letter from the League to the organizers of a mass meeting of the 'Cheap-Freight Railway League' in Houston and prints various endorsements of the League's goals.<br /> FIRST EDITION.
