From a total edition of 340 numbered copies this is ONE OF A FEW COPIES ON FINE RIVES LAID PAPER IN WHICH ALL OF THE ENGRAVINGS WERE BEAUTIFULLY COLORED BY HAND FOR A GROUP OF COLLECTORS. The colophon / limitation statement in these copies ends with a printed note not included in other copies: "Cet exemplaire est l'un de ceux qui ont été coloriés à la main spécialement pour un groupe d'amateurs." I have seen thousands of livres d'artiste but this is the only time I've ever seen a printed note like this one distinguishing it from virtually all of the other copies of the edition. Large 8vo. 1937017038London: A Zwemmer 1937. First Thus. . Hardcover. Good. First thus limited edition this being no 54 of 250 full vellum with simple gilt titling to spine laced-in ties to joints. Printed on hand-made paper "manufactured by an old process rediscovered by Aristide Maillol". Simple stiff card slipcase. 20.5 13.5cm vi 211p 1 collophon. This copy has been signed by Aristide Maillol to the limitation page. Additionally this copy belonged to Belgian artist and writer E L T Mesens and given to him by Anton Zwemmer with a warm personal inscription to the ffep "Pour mon vieux copain Edward Mesens en toute sympathie A Zwemmer May 28 1946". In 1937 Zwemmer and Roland Penrose bought the London Gallery and Mesens was appointed the gallery's director. Under Mesens' directorship and with Zwemmer's financial backing it became the centrepoint for Surrealism in England with exhibitions of Joan Miro and Picasso both in the gallery and in Zwemmer's shop. A Greek pastoral poem ascribed to Sophist Longus 4th or 5th century AD which tells the story of the tender love of Daphnis and Chloe the children of a goatherd and a shepherd. This being the George Thornley translation of 1657. This copy with 52 illustrations by Maillol title page vignette fifty within the text and one to the collophon printed by Philippe Gonin of Paris. Condition: There is surface fading to the upper board's vellum but otherwise this copy remains in very good solid condition. The pages are clean and the inner binding is secure. The slipcase has slightly dusty edges but is in solid shape. <br/> <br/> A Zwemmer hardcover

L'édition fut rééditée en 1731 puis en 1745. Après la mort du Régent en 1723 Coypel détenteur des cuivres mit en vente des suites d'estampes de Daphnis et Chloé. Deux figures qui ont trait à l'éducation amoureuse de Daphnis par Licoemion furent détruites ce qui explique pourquoi en 1731 ces suites ne comprenaient plus que 26 estampes au lieu de 28. An anonymous mid-eighteenth-century English translation of the only extant work of inconspicuous second-century Hellenistic author Longus. The novel considered the first pastoral prose narrative concerns two foundlings raised by shepherds who fall in love. They are later kidnapped and separated but ultimately reunited. Daphnis and Chloe is distinguished by its singular exploration of eroticism; concertedly focused on the physical aspects of romantic relationships with particular comments on masochism and rape.
