According to Eleanor Garvey "The Artist and the Book" p. 122 this work is "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books."<br /> An ancient Greek novel written during the Roman Empire the only known work of the 2nd century CE Greek novelist and romance writer Longus translated by George Thornley in 1657 the story of Daphnis and Chloe inspired the French-Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol 1861-1944 to create an extensive set of sometimes mischievous woodcuts of nymphs and lovers using the same classical lines that typify his sculpture. The format of the book is particularly suited "to the black and white balance of the decorated page" François Chapon. The images the luscious hand-made paper the sensual tone of the engravings all contribute to this piquant book meant to educate and titillate the "young beauties" to whom the book is dedicated. The Epistle Dedicatory reads "To Young Beauties". "The ceremonies customes & manners of the ancient Greekes; with delightfull interspersion of their old and sweet Tales: And in short; nothing to vex you unless perchance in your own conscience. A. First Edition Thus Lowe's new critical Greek text with english translation on diglot facing pages. 12mo red cloth gilt spine lettering. xi 1 195pp. B/W frontispiece portrait of the statue of Pan and Daphnis at the Mueso delie Terme in Rome. Tips a bit worn spine a bit toned sound otherwise. Annotated with learned and comments in a fine contemporary hand with extensive notes to the rear blanks. Among other reflections the annotator remarks on p. 160 'The excision of over-erotic passages has led here and there to solecism e.g. the change of 'hon' to 'heyn' in IV11 calls for the omission of 'kai' before 'ouden'.' We suspect the owner's name 'R. A. Clarke' appears to be in another name leaving this first reader unfortunatlely anonymous noting only 'From Class Rev. August 1910 after the final notes. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars being considered trivial and/or pornographic until the 1960s when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.' Translated from the original Greek by Christopher Collins. The only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. A tender novel describing eager and inept young love Daphnis and Chloe tells the story of a baby boy and girl who are discovered separately two years apart alone and exposed on a Greek mountainside. Taken in by a goatherd and a shepherd respectively and raised near the town of Mytilene they grow to maturity unaware of one another's existence until the mischievous god of love Eros creates in them a sudden overpowering desire for one another. A masterpiece among early Greek romances attracting both high praise and moral disapproval this work has proved an enduringly fertile source of inspiration for musicians writers and artists from Henry Fielding to Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Maurice Ravel. Longus transforms familiar themes from the romance genre including pirates dreams and the supernatural into a virtuoso love story that is rich in insight humorous and ironical in its treatment of human sexual experience.
