Translated from the original Greek by Christopher Collins. The only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. A tender novel describing eager and inept young love Daphnis and Chloe tells the story of a baby boy and girl who are discovered separately two years apart alone and exposed on a Greek mountainside. Taken in by a goatherd and a shepherd respectively and raised near the town of Mytilene they grow to maturity unaware of one another's existence until the mischievous god of love Eros creates in them a sudden overpowering desire for one another. A masterpiece among early Greek romances attracting both high praise and moral disapproval this work has proved an enduringly fertile source of inspiration for musicians writers and artists from Henry Fielding to Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Maurice Ravel. Longus transforms familiar themes from the romance genre including pirates dreams and the supernatural into a virtuoso love story that is rich in insight humorous and ironical in its treatment of human sexual experience. 1954002315Paris: Manuel Bruker 1954. First Limited Edition. Wraps. Very Good. No. 12 of 20. With a folio of three original ink drawings signed by Vertes a folio of 10 engravings that were rejected for use in the book proper and a suite of all the engravings used in the book. This copy is also inscribed by the artist to the collector/owner which is not something called for in the limitation. 204 pp. Stylistically the Hungarian-American Vertes brought a loose near-abstraction sensibility to what nonetheless remained lucidly representational art. He executed his images with a spare economy while keeping his lines fluid and flowing. At times his output could look slapdash and improvisational; this effect though splendidly captured the emphemeral moment in an ever-changing scene and we can sense easily movement and motion. Vertes was a modernist very much of his time and place. His was an oeuvre that dared to please the average man and thus his work decorate such places as the lobby of the Carlyle Hotel in New York. Vertes was also a costume designer who won an Academy Award for his art direction and costume designs in the movie "Moulin Rouge" released in 1952.

Manuel Bruker paperback books
1934002243France 1934. First Edition presumed. Wraps made of 18th Century French Vellum Documents. Near Fine. No text with fifteen color lithographed plates of a softcore sensibility with nudity. The only words in the story proper is the title rendered in Cyrillic. The illustrations are far from lewd yet do have a delicious kitschy quality of the second-rate book illustration and they were in their time meant to give the viewer a frisson of excitement from partaking of something mildly naughty and taboo. The illustrations feel anachronistic fitting more squarely in the twentieth century than the classical world being portrayed but perhaps that is also their charm. No one could find the illustrations pretentious or overblown and if nothing else they do capture a simplicity and innocence that are at the core of the tale. Perhaps the most special aspect of the booklet is the wraps or outer wraps to be precise made up of two sheets of vellum documents from the mid-18th century that may have come from a Royal Archive. These sheets were clearly meant to conceal the erotic contents. One of the documents is signed Besnard P and is a letter dated 25 9bre 1734 with a seal of the city of Rouen. Back to the Daphis and Chloe a few of the plates bear a stylized device of what appears to be "LG" and above the date of 1934.

hardcover books
