Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine a little heavier to the extremities resulting in a little loss of paper. Minor marks to the boards and spine. Internally firmly bound. This is the publisher's copy accompanied by 6 autograph letters from Maillol to the publisher discussin varuious aspects of the making of the book. As with all his books Maillol was closely involved in all aspects of production and the result is an extremely pleasing work "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books" Garvey. This is copy number 1 of 25 hors commerce copies on large paper containing a double suite of the plates one in black and white and one in sanguine. It is also accompanied by a somewhat foxed example of the wedding invitation which Maillol printed for Gonin and a letter from Gonin to the original purchaser of this copy. Old leather boards binding; needs rebacking. The pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe is attributed to Longus a third century A.D. Greek poet. Idyllic in nature the poem tells the charming story of the love of a goat herd and a shepherdess. Daphnis and Chloe was widely popular in France and England in the 17th and 18th century. This text was translated from the Greek by Jacques Amyot 1513-1593. Jolie édition excessivement recherchée le premier tirage de 1718 se limite à 250 exemplaires. Edition dite du Régent parce que c'est Philippe d'Orléans qui l'a fait exécuter et a fait graver les estampes par Benoît Audran. La figure des "petits pieds" attribuée à Caylus ne fait pas partie du livre n'ayant été gravée qu'en 1728 mais on l'y a ajoutée dans beaucoup d'exemplaires. L'édition fut rééditée en 1731 puis en 1745. Après la mort du Régent en 1723 Coypel détenteur des cuivres mit en vente des suites d'estampes de Daphnis et Chloé. Deux figures qui ont trait à l'éducation amoureuse de Daphnis par Licoemion furent détruites ce qui explique pourquoi en 1731 ces suites ne comprenaient plus que 26 estampes au lieu de 28. "Longos in lateinischer Form: Longus war ein griechischer Schriftsteller der Antike. Er ist der Autor des berühmten Hirten- und Liebesromans 'Daphnis und Chloe' und der Zweiten Sophistik zuzuordnen. . Longos vermischt in seinem Roman Elemente des antiken Liebes- und Abenteuerromans mit Motiven der Bukolik und entwickelt dabei eine eigene Art der Poesie in Prosa.
