With numerous engravings illustrations throughout the text from Jules Theophile Schuler 1821-1878 a French painter and Romantic illustrator as well as other artists. This is a wonderful collection of historical fiction novellas written by Erckmann-Chatrian. These books were well-read within France at the time for reflecting current events with historical accuracy but through the personal lens of fictionalised characters. These works were often extremely anti-monarchist leading them to be well loved by the likes of Victor Hugo and Emile Zola but criticised in the 'Le Figaro' daily newspaper. Contents include 'Le Conscrit de 1813' 'Waterloo' 'Madame Therese ou Les Volontaires de 92' 'L'Homme du Peuple' and 'La Guerre'. Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by Emile Erckmann 1822-1899 and Alexandre Chatrian 1826-1890 who both specialised in military fiction as well as ghost stories and co-wrote these works together. They wrote a range of works together from 1847 to the mid-1880s when they had a quarrel and would not produce any more stories jointly. Undated so dated from Jisc using similar copies held at the British Library as well as the University of Edinburgh and University of Oxford. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of the 'Waterloo' section of text.Collated complete. Bound in a full-calf morocco binding with Wimbledon School gilt inscription on front boards.
