Undated dated from a copy held by Hathi Trust. 'Histoire d'un Paysan' is a serial novel by Erckmann-Chatrian i.e. Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian which describes the French Revolution as seen from Lorraine. Illustrated by Theophile Schuler with engravings by Francois Pannemaker including a frontispiece title page illustrations and further illustrations throughout the text. In the original cloth binding. Externally very smart with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned but generally clean with occasional spots heaviest to the first and last few leaves. Two volumes of Romans Nationaux by Erckmann-Chatrian. Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by French authors Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian who wrote together. They wrote numerous historical novels which had nationalistic and republican sentiments. These volumes contain a collection of these historical fiction novellas. With five novellas to volume one and nine to volume two. Some of the stories that appear in the first volume are L'Invasion La Guerre and Confidences d'un Jouer de Clarinette. The second volume has a title page and frontispiece for Histoire D'un Paysan which is dated 1869 and starts the second part of Romans Nationaux and is dated 1871. Some of the stories in volume two are Le Blocus L'illustre Docteur Matheus and Waterloo. With many in-text illustrations. Page 95 to part two is torn in volume two. In quarter leather with cloth boards. Externally a little worn with rubbing to the spines and joints and library stickers to the tails of the spines. With marks to the boards.
