Dennoch ist ihr literarischer Wert in Frankreich nicht unumstritten: für manche Leser sind sie zu "deutsch" andere stören sich an ihrer optimistischen Grundhaltung die gelegentlich naiv oder gar kitschig wirkt. Dagegen steht allerdings der Realismus ihrer Erzählungen der die Romantik oft überwiegt.
