This copy belonged to the historian Peter Gay - his name appears in blue ink on the verso of each front endpaper. 1895 Hard Cover. xxiv 384; xvi 352 pp. 8vo. Engraved frontispieces of Marmontel and Voltaire. A memoir by the French historian and writer who was also member of the Encyclopedistes movement notable for developing the Encyclopedie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Marmontel contributed a series of articles thereto served as a patron to Madame de Pompadour and was named historiographer of France 1771 secretary to the Academy 1783 and professor of history in the Lycee 1786. First published in 1804 in four volumes his memoirs remain of great importance to literary historians. They include a picturesque review of his life a literary history of two important reigns a great gallery of portraits extending from the venerable Jean Baptiste Massillon to Honore Mirabeau. The book was nominally written for the instruction of his children. It contains an exquisite picture of his own childhood in the Limousin; its value for the literary historian is great. While the titles of both stories imply a focus on parenting and both pieces emphasize the dangers of bad mothering the major lessons here are that sons should avoid gambling partying and expensive mistresses while taking care to fall in love with women who are virtuous and wealthy.<br>Â Â Â Â A woodcut headpiece opens each story in this printing which is now uncommon: WorldCat finds => only one U.S. institution reporting a copy Princeton and just a handful of other locations all in France.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: From the children's book collection of Albert A. Quickly translated into numerous languages following its initial publication Marmontel's controversial philosophical novel was written in great part in the hope that its retelling of the story of Gen. Flavius Beisarius of the Byzantine Empire would convince Louis XV to become himself the longed-for Philosopher-King. Chapter 15 however in which Marmontel advocates freedom of opinion and religious tolerance inspired extensive commentary by Voltaire and others and brought on condemnation by both the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris though it may ultimately have helped the Huguenot cause.<br>Â Â Â Â Merlin also printed a duodecimo edition in 1767; in the present edition "Fragmens de philosophie morale" is found on pp. 273340 followed by the Addition and Approbation.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front pastedown with large round gilt-stamped armorial leather bookplate of notable 19th-century book collector Edward Hailcrone; smaller round cream-colored leather gilt-stamped I.T. bookplate with motto Inter folia fructus of 19th-century bookseller and bookcollector James Toovey; and paper bookplate of Sir Montague Shearman.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary crimson morocco covers framed in gilt triple fillets; spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather labels board edges and turn-ins with gilt rolls.
