The original French Bélisaire is a banned 1767 novel on the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius by Jean-François Marmontel 1723-1799. It popularised the apocryphal tale of his being reduced to beggary by Justinian I despite his great services to the empire citing it as an example of the ingratitude of those in power towards their faithful servants and indicting the French king Louis XV by proxy as another such ungrateful monarch. In the Netherlands the translation was received with enthousiasm as well as protest and resulted in a fierce discussion about whether heathens like Socrates could find a place in Heaven. hardcover

The two frontispieces in our edition appear to be reverse copies of the illustrations executed by J.M. Moreau le jeune for Lacombe's 1777 edition the first illustrated.

The political philosophical and theological significance of this novel is very considerable and Marmontel's text was quickly translated into German English Dutch Italian Russian Swedish and Spanish. Luciano Pellegrini explains its lasting importance and its relevance to modern readers:

"'Les Incas' presents a moment of the Conquistadors. Using the knowledge on the subject accumulated over the years and numerous readings Marmontel traces an epic picture of the conquest of Peru by Pizarro and his companions. Not to praise it but to underline its violence and show the monitory end of the empire of 'the most human people in the universe.' . It is a plea against religious fanaticism understood as 'the spirit of intolerance and persecution the spirit of hatred and vengeance for the cause of a God whom one believes irritated and of whom one makes himself the Ministers. . Pizarro remains responsible for the atrocities committed by his men without really sharing them. . One could notice the presence of attitudes of colonial domination in Alonzo de Molina's love for the native Cora. These very real ambiguities are however inseparable from the philosophical commitment of 'Les Incas.' They even touch on the project of universal tolerance carried by Marmontel and largely contribute to the literary quality of a novel which had a success for more than a century."

1773LTH28-D-19London: P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. An attractive copy of Jean-Francois Marmontel historical work on the life and times of the Byzantine military leader Belisarius. Translated into English from the original French. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lycée in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambré Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown.Entitled 'Belisaire' in the original French the work was incredibly controversial. The work made bold comparisons between Belisarius' decline into poverty at the hand of his king Justinian I and the then current French monarch Louis XV and his treatment of his people. Furthermore the French ecclesiastical authorities were angered by the works perpetuation of the the virtues of religious tolerance. These factors resulted in the work being banned in France. Not only a interesting history of this Byzantine military leader this work is also valuable as it touches upon the political climate of 18th century France. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Very Good Indeed P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover
