Rebound in half blue calf with marbled paper boards.This set contains three volumes from the original five-volume anthology Classic Tales Serious and Lively collected by Leigh Hunt.These volumes are undated. Dated here using Jisc from copies held at University of Birmingham Libraries National Library of Scotland York Minster and Trinity College Dublin Library.The volumes included here are Marmontel Goldsmith and Brooke and Johnson and Others. The two missing volumes are Hawkesworth and Voltaire.The anthology features moral and entertaining tales from a variety of prolific writers. Each volume includes Leigh Hunt"s critical essays introducing the authors and their works. Leigh Hunt 17841859 was an English essayist poet and critic known for his wit liberal politics and role in the Romantic literary circle. Rebound in half calf with marbled paper boards. Externally very smart. Slight rubbing to boards. Rubbing to spines resulting in slight loss to calf. Slight discoloration to perimeters. Internally firmly bound. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus 39-65 CE was an important Roman poet born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus 48 BC where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero. After the publication of Pharsalia the Emperor forbade him to write or even plead in the courts and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The engraved plates in this edition are mostly by the famous French engraver and book illustrator Hubert Francois Gravelot 1699-1733. The original art was by: Antoine-Jean Duclos; Emanuel Jean Nepomucene Ghendt; Noel Le Mire; Francois Denis Nee; Jean Francois Rousseau; and Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet. Pages 317-320 have been misbound after page 324 to volume I. Illustrated throughout with twenty three plates across all volumes as well as engraved title pages. Collated complete. Volume III is the only volume to have a title page with publication details. From the library of Sir Richard Paul Jodrell 1745-1831 a classical scholar and playwright. Jodrell's bookplate is to the front pastedown of all volumes and his signature is to the recto of the front endpapers. Mermontel's Contes Moraux were a famous series. The appreciation for this work was due to the delicate finish of the style but mainly in the graphic and charming pictures of French society under King Louis XV. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally very smart with small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of spines. Minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Handling marks to boards. Bookplate of previous owner to front pastedown of all volumes Sir Richard Paul Jodrell. His signature to the recto of front endpapers to all volumes. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots throughout. Frequent marginal annotations and some notes to endpapers by prior owner light and not affecting text. Small ink spills to page 313-16 to volume I. Very Good Chez Merlin hardcover
