In a French Didot binding of red leather with gilt spine lettering all edges gilt aqua coloured watered silk end papers engraved frontispiece many engraved plates. The soft red leather binding is rubbed to the covers and edges and especially to the spine which is chipped at the ends but the binding is tight. Internally near fine crisp and clean apart from some stains to the first few pages. This book belonged to the family of Richard Cromwell Warner who has inscribed the first blank with the story of how as a child his grandfather Richard Warner had thrown volume II out of the porthole of a ship on the way to the West Indies in order to avoid any further study of French!
