A scarce printing of Fénelon’s popular novel which Worldcat records in just 2 locations both in Switzerland in a worn but still attractive contemporary binding. This copy belonged to a P. An early copy of the Avantures de Telemaque Fils d’Ulysse or the “Adventures of Telemachus son of Ulysses†published six years after the First. Written by Francois Fenelon while he was tutor of Louis Duke of Burgundy. The work served as a didactic tool for the future ruler the young ‘Fils de France’ as well as a not-so-subtle critique of absolute monarchy and King Louis XIV. Literary historian Jean-Claude Bonnet is quoted as stating that the Avantures is “the true key to the museum of the eighteenth century imagination;†an instant bestseller Telemaque went through numerous editions. Text in French. Two volumes in one; additional title page for Tome II; pagination and collation reset. Title pages in black and red; with seventeen engraved plates throughout. Francois Fenelon 6 August 1651 7 January 1715 was a French Roman Catholic archbishop theologian poet and writer. He today is remembered mostly as the author of The adventures of Telemachus a thinly veiled attack on the French monarchy first published in 1699. As tutor Fenelon was charged with guiding the character formation of a future King of France. He wrote several important works specifically to guide his young charge. These include his Fables and his Dialogues des Morts. In a half calf binding with marbled paper-covered boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing and wear to extremities. In a French Didot binding of red leather with gilt spine lettering all edges gilt aqua coloured watered silk end papers engraved frontispiece many engraved plates. The soft red leather binding is rubbed to the covers and edges and especially to the spine which is chipped at the ends but the binding is tight. Internally near fine crisp and clean apart from some stains to the first few pages. This book belonged to the family of Richard Cromwell Warner who has inscribed the first blank with the story of how as a child his grandfather Richard Warner had thrown volume II out of the porthole of a ship on the way to the West Indies in order to avoid any further study of French! Dialogue between A B and C on the nature of eloquence A having the role of Socrates and employing maieutics B and C responding to A's questions. The characters discuss a sermon they have just heard and from there define the qualities of true eloquence by drawing these from examples of the Ancients. Fénelon criticizes both Ancients and Moderns giving preference to the eloquence of Holy Scripture. Du Cerceau's essay attempts to characterize French poetry and what makes verse specific in relation to prose.
