Denoted the "Second Edition with large additions" although ESTC locates copies of a 1714 edition from Taylor making the same claim. The first edition of Abel Boyer's translation appeared in 1713. An early copy of the Avantures de Telemaque Fils d'Ulysse or the "Adventures of Telemachus son of Ulysses" published six years after the First. Written by Francois Fenelon while he was tutor of Louis Duke of Burgundy. The work served as a didactic tool for the future ruler the young 'Fils de France' as well as a not-so-subtle critique of absolute monarchy and King Louis XIV. Literary historian Jean-Claude Bonnet is quoted as stating that the Avantures is "the true key to the museum of the eighteenth century imagination;" an instant bestseller Telemaque went through numerous editions. Text in French. Two volumes in one; additional title page for Tome II; pagination and collation reset. Title pages in black and red; with seventeen engraved plates throughout. In 1679 Fénelon became the director of the Nouvelles-Catholiques a community of => Huguenot girls undergoing conversion to Catholicism and published the present work after several years of experience there.<br>Â Â Â Â WorldCat reports => only four U.S. institutional holdings of this attractive Antoine-Augustin Renouard printing. While this copy does include the half-title the engraved portrait cited by OCLC as appearing in some copies is not present here with the volume showing no signs of its ever having been present.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary mottled calf covers framed in gilt roll spine gilt extra with gilt-stamped leather title-label; board edges with single gilt fillet turn-ins with gilt roll resembling but not identical to cover roll. All edges gilt. Binding as above showing rubbing to spine joints and extremities. Portrait reported in some copies not present here; pages with scattered instances of mild spotting. => An elegant little testament to the enduring influence of this work progressive for its day. Ant.
