Mr. Wegner has been Curator of Ship Models at the David Taylor Model Basin Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Maryland since 1980. He began his study of designer's hull models at the Smithsonian Institution in 1968 and is a member of the American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers the U.S. Naval Institute and the Organization of American Historians. The purpose of this study has been to utilize an interdisciplinary team to examine new evidence in order to determine the identity of the present Constellation: was it built in 1797 or 1855 Recognizing the controversy as one of the most emotionally-charged debates in recent American maritime history the team would not have exacerbated this subject had they not discovered fresh and important historical artifactual and technological evidence. Is the Constellation the oldest warship afloat in the world Or is it the last sail-only warship designed by the Navy. Responsible stewshardship for the irreplaceable ship afloat in Baltimore demands that there be a full understanding of its history. The study concludes that the frigate Constellation was built in 1796-97 and torn apart in 1853. In 1853-1855 a new sloop-of-war Constellation was designed and built and is the one preserved and displayed today. n.p. [Presumed to by U. S.
