First published in its original form as Darwin's first monograph under the title "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs Being the first part of the geology of the voyage of the Beagle under the command of Capt. Fitzroy R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836" The monograph set out Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs and atolls. He extensively revised and rewrote the book for its 1874 second edition to take into account James Dwight Dana's 1872 publication 'Corals and Coral Islands' and work by Joseph Jukes. This is the third edition with Darwin's prefaces to the first and second edition and a preface to this edition by his son Francis Darwin. It also includes an appendix by the geologist Thomas George Bonney on the study of coral reefs since 1874. "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs" remains an important landmark in the science of coral reefs and is relatively uncommon. Includes references to North-West coast of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef 3rd edition. Half leather. D. Appleton hardcover

1934864H4567London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited. Fair. 1934. First English Edition. Hardcover. xiii 3 362 6 ads pages. Twenty-one black and white photographic plates. "Based on material collected by the World Committee for the Relief of the Victims of German Fascism." - subtitle. Madden describes this work as a "Marxist publication which concludes that the Nazis burned the Reichstag. An appendix claims to list 747 proven cases of murder committed by the Nazis. Above-average but not excessive wear and soiling to publisher's faded red cloth. Binding intact. The only markings begin at page 231 and continue to the end. Small handwritten fore-edge stickman images become moving pictures if you quickly flip through to the back of the book. Quite harmless actually although such a playful excercise seems oddly inconsistent with the content of the book. Dust jacket not included.
