Some scraping to the sides. Rubbing to the spine and the corners: the central area of the spine is significantly darkened. Internally clean. With the three fold-out maps two of which have coloured details and in excellent condition. Very good condition. First published in its original form as Darwin's first monograph under the title "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs Being the first part of the geology of the voyage of the Beagle under the command of Capt. Fitzroy R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836" The monograph set out Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs and atolls. He extensively revised and rewrote the book for its 1874 second edition to take into account James Dwight Dana's 1872 publication 'Corals and Coral Islands' and work by Joseph Jukes. This is the third edition with Darwin's prefaces to the first and second edition and a preface to this edition by his son Francis Darwin. It also includes an appendix by the geologist Thomas George Bonney on the study of coral reefs since 1874. "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs" remains an important landmark in the science of coral reefs and is relatively uncommon.
