From the introduction to catalogue 665: "In compiling this Catalogue we have separated the Armorial or Association items from the definitely decorative bindings. In some cases the two classes may overlap but they are really distinct in character. To describe a binding in words alone can never do full justice to its worth and nearly all have therefore been illustrated. In each case the size has been added as the illustrations in themselves might be misleading some showing the bindings full size and others greatly reduced. We do not lay claim to a complete survey of the binder's art in England from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries but the followtng examples would certainly occupy a worthy place in any specialist library or form a solid foundation on which to build a representative collection." Some light wear generally very good. "The present catalogue is the first of a new Series devoted to English Literature prior to 1800. The shortage of paper makes the production of our larger catalogues an impossibility until more normal conditions prevail and the shortage of printing operatives renders the dates of publication uncertain. Maggs celebrated its 500th catalog with bibliographical fireworks displaying the wide range of their riches from illuminated manuscripts to a Napoleon letter to the first Greek Aristotle 1495-98 plus 19 Americana. When I obtained this there was beginning the damage typical of such a large and heavy book. A firm of long standing and excellent repute Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts was noted for their emphasis in early books and Latin American imprints. The proprietors issued an important contribution to early American printing: 39 Books and Broadsides Printed in America before the Bay Psalms Book.
