The illustrations color frontispiece 9 color plates with tissue-guards intact a title-page drawing and chapter-head line drawings feature lots of nekkid ladies Ms. Tice's specialty and bear captions along the lines of "She smiled with her legs as she spoke with her torso." This is stated on the limitation page to be one of "1250 copies of which 990 are for America." Although one is usually well-advised to take the professed numbers on these vintage-erotica items with a grain of salt what makes this one especially interesting though is that instead of a number written into the blank space below the statement the single word "presentation" is inked; in addition on the half-title page is a 3-inch-tall original drawing of yet another nudie that is SIGNED by Clara Tice. A brightly illustrated erotic novel the tone of which is captured beautifully by Tice's drawings. Some rubbing to the boards and a concavity to the spine; jacket with a few traces of edge wear. Text is free of marks although there is light soil present to the bottom edge of the text block. Binding tight and solid boards have some light wear and scuffing present to the extremities. La Femme et le pantin The Woman and the Puppet is a 1898 novel by Pierre Louÿs. During the carnival in Seville the Frenchman André Stévenol meets and falls under the spell of Conception 'Concita' Perez a young Andalusian woman. His friend don Mateo Diaz warns him off by describing his own history with the woman a history of being repeatedly attracted and then rebuffed by her. Pierre Louÿs was a French poet and writer most renowned for lesbian and classical themes in some of his writings. He is known as a writer who sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection." He was made first a Chevalier and then an Officer of the Légion d'honneur for his contributions to French literature. Clara Tice 22 May 1888 2 February 1973 was an American avant-garde illustrator and artist who spent most of her life in New York City United States. Because of her provocative art and public appearances she was seen as representative of bohemian Greenwich Village and thus known as "The Queen of Greenwich Village." Stated limited edition of a new translation and one of only 2500 such copies though the line for the actual number out of said 2500 has been left blank. Pages are browned but are in remarkable condition with no writing marks or underlining. There is a bookplate bearing a former owner's name on the front pastedown endpaper. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true and the corners are square.There is no dust jacket and the boards are moderately worn especially along the edges where the dark coloring has worn away to the brown underneath. Spine is still quite legible with the title and author as they are on the front board where they appear in gold gilt. This collectible limited edition copy is protected with an archival mylar cover.
