Xavier de Maistre volunteer in the Sardinian Navy regiment passionate about ballooning writes ""this natural and charming confession"" during a 40-day military order imposed following a duel. He speaks of it thus: ""a whole world of feelings emotions and memories which Uncle Tobie's dada can paw at in all fantasy"". Edouard HEDOUIN's etchings of great finesse adorn this author's portrait. Rough cut edges on side and bottom. Capitals and some devices in red within the text. Portrait frontispiece of the author protected by sheet. Some pages have spotting. Overall very good. An autobiographical and whimsical account of the authros time in a Turin jail following a duel he imagines wandering around his cell. After finishing the manuscript the author left it with his brother who secretly published it. A limited edition of Xavier de Maistre's story concerning lepers in Aosta illustrated by Carlegle complete with its glassine wraps. Xavier de Maistre of Savoy was a military man mainly known as a French writer. This short novel is the touching story of leprosy told through a conversation between a soldier and a leper who reminisces about his lost youth and stolen life spent in a tower with a view of the Alps. In the original French. One of three hundred copies printed on Arches paper this copy number two hundred and thirty seven. Decorated in text with woodcuts by Carlègle Swiss-born illustrator and painter. Complete with its glassine dust wrapper. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally smart with minor shelf wear light spotting and age toning to the wraps minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine. The dust wrapper is lacking the spine separating the front from the rear wrap unclipped with a slight shelf wear and chipping to the wraps. Internally firmly bound. Odd minor spotting to the odd leaf otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated in text with woodcuts by Carlègle. Very Good Leon Pichon paperback
