Servi par une mémoire visuelle exceptionnelle entretenue dès sa jeunesse par la fréquentation des musées le musée Guimet notamment et par ses voyages Malraux mit sa culture au service d'une doctrine métaphysique de l'art explicitée dès 1951 dans Les Voix du silence. La photographie allait lui permettre de réunir les chefs-d'oeuvre dispersés à travers le monde dans un musée imaginaire à portée de main : à partir des clichés du photographe Maurice Jarnoux il compose le premier volume de ce qui deviendra La Métamorphose des dieux - trois recueils intitulés Le Surnaturel L'Irréel et L'Intemporel. « Comme mes romans comme mes Antimémoires comme Les Voix du silence La Métamorphose des dieux traite essentiellement de la relation de l'homme et du destin » écrit-il dans sa préface. Il constitue le septième volume de la collection « La Galerie de la Pléiade » ; 30 planches d'illustrations en couleurs et de nombreuses reproductions en noir viennent enrichir le texte. Malraux et Genevoix sont les deux seuls écrivains du XXe siècle à figurer au Panthéon : ce volume constitue un témoignage discret mais précieux d'un lien intellectuel entre deux hommes que rapprochaient leur expérience de la guerre leur réflexion sur la transmission de la mémoire et leur place dans la vie publique française - l'un à la tête du ministère de la Culture l'autre bientôt secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie française et académicien depuis 1946. Leur dialogue se poursuit bien au-delà de cette dédicace puisque dans les années 1960 alors que Malraux devient ministre de la Culture c'est à Genevoix que l'on confie la mission de faire revivre les écrivains morts pour la France notamment par le biais du comité du souvenir littéraire de la Grande Guerre. Malraux pour son oeuvre et son action rentrera au Panthéon en 1996 ; Genevoix l'y suivra 24 ans plus tard avec « Ceux de 14 » dans la lignée de l'idée d'un musée invisible de la grandeur humaine telle que Malraux l'envisageait.
