Archive of press material compiled by Cinedis a French press and film agency concerning the formation and founding members of the Ministere de la Culture Ministry of Culture of France. <br /> <br /> The Ministry of Culture was created by Charles de Gaulle in 1959 and the first Minister was writer Andre Malraux whose responsibilities included the democratizing of access to culture museums monuments and elevating postwar France. He created several cultural centers throughout France actively sponsored the arts television film visual dance literary etc. but his tastes although wide-ranging remained conservative. During the early years of the Ministry M. Jacques Jaujard was its general secretary and he was instrumental in coordinating various organizations like Arts and Humanities National Theaters Monuments Cinema Tourist propaganda popular Education. Jaujard eventually left eh Ministry in 1967 and Malraux left shortly after upon de Gaulle's final term as President. The Ministry is still in operation to this day keeping the artistic and culture heritage of France and making the countries museums and cultural centers widely accessible. <br /> <br /> An engrossing collection regarding a much advertised birth of one of France's finest organizations the archive consists of thirty single sheets of Cinedis parchment with various stapled French newspaper articles pertaining to Malraux Jaujard and the Ministry. Nearly all sheets bear annotations in manuscript ink noting the date of the article 1959 throughout mostly early in the year and a few loose newspapers and clippings are included. Near Fine overall. Malraux was in a distinct position to write such an intimate work having served as the first minister of cultural affairs during de Gaulle's presidency from 1959 to 1969. Before that Malraux had also served as de Gaulle's information minister from 1945 to 1946. This copy inscribed and signed to the former U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Bohlen 1962-1968. Bohlen also served as Ambassador to the Soviet Union and the Philippines. Gallimard unknown

The rare "Second Edition" of the first issue with the errata slip and original prospectus. Sounds counter-intuitive but the second edition of this volume contains superior half-tone reproductions of the photographs by Alfred Stieglitz. The errata slip explains that this smaller second edition had to be produced in order to fill outstanding orders. Light wear and scuffing to covers. A 1/2 inch closed tear to top edge of front cover. Covers are toned and hinges are a bit worn. The copy is holding nicely in spite of condition issues. Twice a Year unknown

Hardcovers two volumes uniformly bound in gray cloth titled in gilt on the front covers and the spines. The covers of both volumes are rubbed and bumped with minor wear to the head & tail of the spine and a small tear to the top of the first volumes' front joint. 155 & 4 pages; and 223 & 4 pages with profuse black & white illustrations including many full-page and tipped-in color plates. The hinges of both volumes are starting to crack and the front endpaper of the first volume has been excised. Good.</p><p>From the library of Dr. Howard D. McKinney d.1980 emeritus professor of music at Rutgers College with his pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume.
