L'amitié entre Maraux et Galanis est précoce puisqu'elle date de 1919. Le jeune homme avait visité son atelier de Montmartre et le premier texte en 1922 de Malraux comme critique d'art c'est en ouverture du catalogue d'une exposition du peintre grec qu'il le donne. Une amitié fondatrice annonciatrice d'une fructueuse collaboration. Lors de toutes ses entreprises éditoriales tant pour le compte de Simon Kra que pour le sien propre associé à son ami d'enfance Louis Chevasson pour créer « À la sphère » qui deviendra « Les Aldes » Malraux fera maintes fois appel à Galanis pour illustrer des livres notamment ceux de Georges Gabory de Paul Morand ou encore d'Albert Samain. Pour la collection des auteurs étrangers chez Gallimard « Du monde entier » Malraux délègue à Galanis la confection de la vignette de couverture le propos de la collection étant de « réunir quelques-uns des meilleurs romans étrangers présentés par des écrivains français connus et dont l'autorité garantisse au lecteur parmi le nombre considérable des traductions de toutes langues une qualité littéraire certaine ». Le motif créé sera utilisé pour chaque titre et sans exception comme fleurons central de couverture jusqu'en 1961 remplacé par un photographisme de Georges Guimbertaud adapté par Massin. Leur amitié culminant avec l'exposition organisée à la Bibliothèque nationale en 1963 sur l'initiative du ministre de la Culture trois ans avant la mort de l'artiste en 1966. Malraux jouera également un plein rôle dans la transformation de la « ruche de Montmartre » - l'atelier où Galanis travaillait dans les années 1920 - en l'actuel Musée de Montmartre. Malraux rédigera ce texte qui constituent l'une de ses dernières publications quelques mois avant sa mort le 23 novembre en l'honneur de son ami. Un texte mélancolique et respectueux qui sera reproduit en fac-similé en tête du catalogue de l'Hommage à Demetrius Galanis organisé du 1er juin au 18 septembre 1976 par le Centre culturel hellénique de Paris au musée de Montmartre justement. Malraux trop affaibli ne pourra s'y rendre : « Que sont devenues ces natures mortes d'Anthologie grecque - figues amandes flûtes de Pan raisins - si différentes de l'illustration des Nuits d'Octobre alors dans sa gloire qu'en 1922 les jeunes écrivains comparaient aux fruits des Cènes toscanes à ceux de Derain Plusieurs ont appartenu à Vanili Photiadès. Combien de surprises nous donnerait une exposition peintures et gravures du temps où Galanis se reposait en décorant d'autres figues et d'autres flûtes l'harmonium qu'il avait fabriqué patiemment entre 1920 et 1930. » Provenance : Paul-Louis Weiller Paris Vente IV 2011 n° 641. Their correspondence seems to reveal that in the 1970s the elderly writer was hunting around the world with his last companion Sophie de Vilmorin for works for their collection.
