199316427New York: Cambridge University Press 1993. First Edition . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 6" x 9. 826 Pages Indexed. Interior text pages are near flawless. This second volume of Michael Mann's analytical history of social power deals with power relations between the Industrial Revolution and the First World War focusing on France Great Britain Hapsburg Austria Prussia/Germany and the United States. Based on considerable empirical research it provides original theories of the rise of nations and nationalism of class conflict of the modern state and of modern militarism. While not afraid to generalize it also stresses social and historical complexity. The author sees human society as a patterned mess and attempts to provide a sociological theory appropriate to this. 189730277New York: M. Witmark & Sons. Very Good-. c.1897. Unstated edition. Sheet Music. a decent clean copy but reinforced with brown paper tape along the spine and the right edge of the front cover. Music and lyrics for a cringeingly racist ditty about "A Coonlet Courtship" with a cover illustration matching the first lyric line: "Two little piccaninnies sitting on a stile" with a handy watermelon at their feet. And of course the front cover proclaims that the song was "sung & illustrated with great success by Maxwell & Simpson" a couple of white guys. I wonder which one of them depicted the little girl The rear cover lists about two dozen additional "Coon Songs" available from the publishers including one by Bert Williams "that are all the rage in the rage of coon songs." If performed today they would no doubt inspire an entirely different variety of rage. . M. Witmark & Sons unknown

2005044749Montreal: McGill Queens Univ Press 2005 Book. As New. Hardcover. Signed by Authors. First Edition. "During an era of separate spheres for men and women Margaret Macdonald used her nurse's training to gain access to the military and a life of work travel and adventure. In 1906 she was one of the first two nurses to receive a permanent appointment to the Canadian Army Medical Corps. She became matron-in-chief of Canada's overseas nursing service during World War I with the rank of major - the first such appointment for a woman in the British Empire. Macdonald also served as a nurse in the military during the Spanish-American and Boer Wars and in Panama during the construction of the canal. Margaret Macdonald traces the life and work of this extraordinary woman from rural Nova Scotia whose sense of duty and ambition found an outlet in the imperialism of Great Britain and the U.S. Susan Mann weaves the threads of character ideology and opportunity into a vivid portrait of Macdonald and her impact on the professionalization of military medical swervices 286p. illus bibliography. index. maps on endpapers.
