Cameron Mann 1851 - 1932 was an author Episcopal priest the Third Bishop of North Dakota and the First Bishop of South Florida. The Theta Delta Chi Society was founded as a social fraternity in 1847 at Union College New York. Byy the last quarter of the 19th century the society spread rapidly adding charges a term used by TDX brothers to refer to their local organizations rather than the more-commonly used "chapters" throughout the entire country including Stanford Berkeley Brown Tufts UVA Dartmouth Yale etc. The historical poem related to the Civil War was written and delivered by Mann at the closing of the 27th Annual Convention of Theta Delta Chi at a grand banquet at Delmonico's in New York. The illustrations designed by Franklin Burdge combined typography and beautiful unique wood-engraved illustrations to represent the Greek letters by which the charge was known. According to a "Notice to Graduates" at the end of the booklet the engravings were included "partly in order that by an inspection of the wood cuts inserted they may judge of the character of the new Catalog of the Society and have their attention called to the fact that more subscriptions are needed to print it." VIII 326 2 p. <p><br /> Guid book about the United States for German emigrants. <br /> <p><p><br /> Gives a detailed description of 27 American states that admitted to the Union until the date of the publication and in addition about Iowa and Wisconsin. It also includes a forty-page description of the United States the biography of George Washington and the translation of his Farewell Address that is most likely the first European edition in German translation of the speech.<br /> <p><p><br /> The book starts with the description of the Thirteen Colonies that formed the United States in 1776 gives detailed information about their geography demography political and legislative system history and provides also an agricultural and economic overview. The second part is the description of the United States its political legislative system its history and economy it gives information about the United States Army the immigration and about the agriculture and religion of the US. This followed by the description of the other sixteen states and the fifty-page biography of George Washington that includes the German translation of the entire Farewell Address. We could not trace any earlier German translations of the text that was published outside the US.<br /> <p><p><br /> The author Dudley Ambrose Mann 1801–1889 was an American diplomat and politician the consul of the United States in Bremen in 1842 the time when its harbour served as the most important and busy emigrant harbour of Central Europe. Later Mann has held various offices in Hungary and Switzerland in 1853 he was appointed the first ever Assistant Secretary of State and from 1861 served as the commissioner of the Confederate States of America for Belgium and the Vatican.<br /> <p><p><br /> Sabin 44309; Howes US IANA M256.<br /> <p>. 1900010662Richmond Virginia 1900. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This business envelope bears the printed return address of Valentine’s Meat-Juice Company of Richmond Virgina. It was sent from Richmond to the Director of the Private Maternity Hospital of Berlin Germany. It is franked with a 5-cent Grant stamp Scott #281 that has been canceled with a Barry Postal Supply Company machine postmark dated 21 February 1900. The reverse is filled with assorted postal labels handstamps in various colors and manuscript annotations related to its delivery despite having an insufficient address. In nice shape.<br /> <br /> <p>In downtown Richmond Mann S. Valentine a prosperous merchant lived with his family in a large neoclassical home. In 1870 his wife Anne Maria fell ill from a “severe and protracted derangement of the organs of digestion†that prevented her from eating solid food. Doctors had given up on curing Anne Maria so Valentine took it upon himself to concoct his own highly concentrated protein and iron tonic which he distilled from a mix of eggs and beef broth. It worked wonders. <br /> <br /> <p>Valentine ever a merchant began to create more which sold well in his store. Seeing the possibility of ever-increasing sales he began to canvass local then regional then nationally known physicians for their endorsements. Some replied with glowing reviews reporting they used it effectively not just as a nutritional supplement but as a treatment for everything from nausea to dysentery and cholera. Valentine began to publish these reviews in advertisements and business boomed. He took his meat juice to the International Paris Exposition in 1878 and introduced it to a global market. Recognizing the importance of physician recommendations Valentine began to contact European doctors for their endorsements. This envelope was no doubt used for that purpose.<br /> <br /> <p>In 1906 the newly created Food and Drug Administration began its crackdown on patent medicines. Seeing the writing on the wall Valentine stopped promoting his meat juice as a curative and began to market it as a cooking supplement for flavoring various dishes. As such it was even more popular than medicine and became a staple on grocery store shelves throughout the country for years until demand finally wore off and the factory located at Brook Road and Chamberlayne Avenue shut its doors.</p> . Valentine amassed a fortune during the last quarter of the 19th century and became an inveterate collector of art and artifacts.
