A remarkable group of 10 portraits of Horace Mann and his family featuring a unique and previously undiscovered cased sixth plate daguerreotype of Mann the great architect of the American system of popular education. The photos were preserved by the Mann family and all are housed in a circa 1950s cardboard box with the typed ownership label of Horace Mann III Mann’s grandson of Southwest Harbor Maine. The box has some internal repair and chipping. The photos are overall very good with general wear and light spotting to two; the daguerreotype has a few scratches at neck level and a couple of mild abrasions but else near fine. unknown

The works are bound together in early 3/4 sheep over marbled boards. The spine is stamped in gold "Historical Papers; "Mann & the Schoolmasters." The front board has been reattached and the binding is solid. <br> Horace Mann was one of the most important figures in the development of universal non-sectarian free education in America. His six reforming principles forms the nucleus of American educational values: 1. the public should no longer remain ignorant; 2. that such education should be paid for controlled and sustained by an interested public; 3. that this education will be best provided in schools that embrace children from a variety of backgrounds; 4. that this education must be non-sectarian; 5. that this education must be taught using the tenets of a free society; and that education should be provided by well-trained professional teachers. Significantly Mann attempted to bring children of all classes together and better equalize the conditions of men. The Seventh Annual Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education included Mann's innovative findings from visits to schools in Europe particularly Prussia Saxony and Holland which Mann felt were superior to those of Massachusetts. The report proposed instruction for the blind deaf and dumb; modes of teaching children to read; the use of text books; and the abandonment of corporal punishment as a primary means of maintaining school discipline. Good.</p><p>RARE First Edition.</p><p>Known as "The Father of the Common School Movement" Massachusetts Secretary of Education Horace Mann 1796-1859 offers a fierce defense of his progressive reforms against the opinions of traditionalist schoolmasters. The controversy came about following Mann's publication of his "Seventh Annual Report". Mann a progressive praised the "object method" approach of the Prussian education system over rote memorization. He advocated for teacher training and for the use of positive reinforcement over corporal punishment that was common in Boston schools of the period. Delegates from several Ohio colleges convened December 29th 1856 to discuss the sentiment held by students that they ought "to withhold all information respecting the misconduct of their fellow-students from Faculty and Teachers". It was resolved that colleges and schools are a community and students should be good citizens by providing information to prevent or solve crimes committed by fellow students. unknown books
