Original brown buckram with bright gilt spine lettering gilt top edge other edges untrimmed. Slight foxing to endpapers. From the library of Robert Barrett with his Rockwell Kentdesigned bookplate on the front endpaper the well-known 1929 Back to Nature plate. The Aloe is Katherine Mansfields posthumously published novella later revised into her celebrated story Prelude with an introduction by her husband John Middleton Murry. Katherine Mansfield 18881923 was a New Zealand-born modernist writer and close friend of Virginia Woolf D. H. Lawrence and members of the Bloomsbury Group. The Aloe was issued in 1930 in an edition of 750 copies. Rockwell Kent designed the Back to Nature plate specifically for Robert Barrett. As with other private commissions multiple impressions were printed for Barretts personal use meaning copies bearing this plate derive from his library. Beyond this association little is documented publicly about Barrett himself; he appears primarily in catalogs of Kent bookplates and in sales of books carrying his plate. For collectors the KentBarrett connection enhances this copys appeal crossing Mansfield Bloomsbury and Kent collecting circles. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
