1853006011London/Boston U.S.: Longman Brown Green and Longmans and Little Brown & Co. 1853. The Irish poetThomas Moore 1779-1852 was also famed for his musical lyrics. His "Irish Melodies" was one of the most popular collections of the 19th Century. He is less kindly remembered for his part in the destruction of his friend Byron's memoirs. This set was issued a year after Moore's death. His editor here was twice the Prime Minister of England. An early advocate for Catholic emancipation Russell was unfortunate; he was in office during the disastrous Irish famine. Eight volumes bound in decoratively green cloth with titling in gilt on the spines. Held by academic libraries in the British Isles but rare in commerce. Generally in Very Good condition with mild bumps rubbing of the margins and fading to the spines. Some have faint flood-markings. The textblocks are clear with Volumes Three to Eight with unopened pages. All have frontis engravings and illustrated half-title pages. Volume One has 372 pages with a 12-oage catalog at the end; portrait of Moore at age 40. Bound by Remnant & Edmonds London. Volume Two has 358 pages with a portrait of Lord Moiral; with a contemporary name on the FFEP. Volume Three has a portrait of Sir John Stevenson M.D.and 367 pages unopened. Volume Four has a portrait of Samuel Rogers with 343 pages unopened. Volume Five features Lord John Russell with 321 pages unopened. Volume Six has the portrait of James Corry with 350 unopened pages. Volume Seven has the portrait of Henry Marquis of Lansdowne; 378 pages and a 2-page catalog unopened. Volume Eight has Moore at the age of 58; 292 pages of text then an Index to page 376. Volumes 5 and 6 show Boston only as the publisher; Volumes 7 and 8 have both cities and are dated 1856. This seems to indicate a mixed state with two later printings and two solely American printings. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 1870002477New York: P.F. Collier 1870. Thomas Moore often refered to as "Ireland's National Poet" was one of the most popular writers of the mid-19th Century. This is a beautifully-produced compendium the "coffee-table" book of its day. Large heavy octavo in a green decorative binding with the various Irish designs filled with gilt. Clean text; 639 pages indexed. All edges are gilt. Tipped-in at the rear is a four-page pamphlet of the publisher's current offerings. There is no publication date but Quercus ventures that stylistically it would be around 1860-80 although Quercus has seen a similar edition by a British publisher that was from 1856. Due to their weight these large Victorian volumes are often seen with split hinges but this one is solid. There is minor rubbing at the margins else a Fine copy Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
