The remarkable modernity of thought apparent in Montaigne's essays coupled with their sustained popularity made them arguably the most prominent work in French philosophy until the Enlightenment. The title itself comes from the French word essais meaning "attempts" or "tests" which shows how this new form of writing did not aim to educate or prove but rather to explore an idea. His topics in Volume I span the entire spectrum of the profound to the trivial from "Of Sorrow" "That to study philosophy is to learn to die" and "Good and Evils Depend Upon Opinion"; To "Of Sleep" "Of Smells" or "Of the Custom of Wearing Clothes". A rare 1743 copy. Leather scuffed and hinges cracked but boards and textblock secure; spine sturdy though exterior chipping down to first raised band at head. This is a Very Good copy of an edition published in England but untranslated from the original French that contained ten volumes this is Book Eight. The publishers Nourse & Vaillant were prominent and prolific during the 18th Century. Full leather binding; spine with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 336 pages; endpapers and page ends are marbled. Text is very bright and clear. While a very sound little book there are several chips to the leather that do detract from its appearance. . Three volumes octavo contemporary dark marbled calf spines with raised bands lettered in blind labels replaced front covers lettered "Wakefield" in gilt capitals. <p><p>The sixth edition "corrected and amended" of Charles Cotton's translation. Cotton 1630-1687 English poet and writer contributor to The Compleat Angler is best known for his version of Montaigne "among the acknowledged masterpieces of translation" DNB. In contrast to Florio's extravagant Elizabethan prose of 1603/1613 Cotton's version was in turn suited to his age with a markedly dryer and plainer English.</p> <p>Cotton's translation holds significant importance in the literary and philosophical realms having helped spread Montaigne's profound and influential ideas to the English-speaking world. All three volume are written entirely in French. Collated complete. Edited by and with copious notes and details of the author by the French theologian translator and writer Pierre Coste. The new edition of this early eighteenth century work. Michel de Montaigne was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. His Essais were originally written between 1570 and 1592 and the first collection were published in 1580. In uniform calf bindings. Externally worn. Severe loss to spines and extremities with heavy rubbing to boards and to the remainder of spines. All joints are tender. Both hinges to volume I are weak and may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender with the rear hinge weak may detach in postage. Large crack centrally down the spine of volume III. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper S D Horton to C P Greenough. Another prior owner's signature to the verso of title page of all volumes. Title page to xxxii has separated from textblock. Binding to volume III is particularly weak between pages 264 and 265 where the binding has split and held by cords only. Otherwise internally generally firmly bound though strained in places.
