Fifth Edition. Montaigne's most influential work and one of the foundations of Skepticism. The remarkable modernity of thought apparent in Montaigne's essays coupled with their sustained popularity made them arguably the most prominent work in French philosophy until the Enlightenment. The title itself comes from the French word essais meaning "attempts" or "tests" which shows how this new form of writing did not aim to educate or prove but rather to explore an idea. His topics in Volume I span the entire spectrum of the profound to the trivial from "Of Sorrow" "That to study philosophy is to learn to die" and "Good and Evils Depend Upon Opinion"; To "Of Sleep" "Of Smells" or "Of the Custom of Wearing Clothes". A rare 1743 copy. Leather scuffed and hinges cracked but boards and textblock secure; spine sturdy though exterior chipping down to first raised band at head. Dampstain around edges of endpapers and pastedown. 1882 ownership signature on pastedown and title page. Age-related toning to pages which are otherwise remarkably clean with neat bold text. Overall in good to very good condition. A rare Enlightenment-era copy of one of the period's most influential texts. unknown

Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek Latin and Italian texts as examples and references such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence." Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features which at the time was extreme volatility. He was skeptical of human reasoning; interestingly that does not keep him to be admired in France. This is a Very Good copy of an edition published in England but untranslated from the original French that contained ten volumes this is Book Eight. The publishers Nourse & Vaillant were prominent and prolific during the 18th Century. Full leather binding; spine with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 336 pages; endpapers and page ends are marbled. Text is very bright and clear. While a very sound little book there are several chips to the leather that do detract from its appearance. . Three volumes octavo contemporary dark marbled calf spines with raised bands lettered in blind labels replaced front covers lettered "Wakefield" in gilt capitals. <p><p>The sixth edition "corrected and amended" of Charles Cotton's translation. Cotton 1630-1687 English poet and writer contributor to The Compleat Angler is best known for his version of Montaigne "among the acknowledged masterpieces of translation" DNB. In contrast to Florio's extravagant Elizabethan prose of 1603/1613 Cotton's version was in turn suited to his age with a markedly dryer and plainer English.</p> <p>Cotton's translation holds significant importance in the literary and philosophical realms having helped spread Montaigne's profound and influential ideas to the English-speaking world. The "Essays" are a collection of personal reflections and philosophical musings covering a wide range of topics such as human nature morality education and the nature of knowledge. The seventh edition "with very considerable amendments and improvements from the most elegant and accurate French edition of Peter Coste;" it is a revised version of Charles Cotton's translation. Three octavo volumes: 2841426; 460836; 446827 pp. In contemporary leather bindings with gilt stamped double-rule frames on sides the bindings lack spine labels and show moderate wear particularly at heels and crowns with some soiling/staining. The joints of volume one have hairline cracks. Text leaves are clean. However one leaf in volume one pp. 265-6 has along closed tear but without any loss of text. Each volume has the ownership signature of Parker Pillsbury as well as some occasional pencil notes or markings in the margins in volumes two and three. Parker Pillsbury 1809-1898 worked ceaselessly for human betterment over the course of his long life primarily as an abolitionist and women's rights activist. He edited The Herald of Freedom Concord New Hampshire in the 1840s and The National Anti-Slavery Standard New York NY in 1866 all while working as an abolitionist lecture agent for the New Hampshire Massachusetts and American anti-slavery societies. After the Civil War Pillsbury labored for Negro suffrage and was interested in temperance political reform international peace and women's rights. He served as vice-president of the New Hampshire Woman Suffrage Association and in 1865 helped draft the constitution of the American Equal Rights Association. For a year and a half 1868-69 he was co-editor with Elizabeth Cady Stanton of The Revolution a radical weekly created by Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. D.A.B. VII pp.608-9. unknown books
