The style and content of his massive work "Essais" were very influential on centuries of later writers. This edition is the well-known Charles Cotton translation from an edition published in 1870. A handsome volume of a landmark work of literature: some of the most interesting essays ever written. The author of a book on Montaigne's work Sarah Bakewell writes that have some have seen him "not just as a philosopher but as the world's truly modern thinker because of his intense awareness that he was complex and self-divided always double in himself as he put it. In my opinion he was the first and greatest philosopher of life as it is actually lived and perhaps the one who has the most to offer our troubled 21st century. . his investigations are not merely random; they all centre on one great question which concerns us all: how does one live That is how does one make wise and honourable choices understand oneself behave as a fully human being treat others well and acquire peace of mind" Gryphon Editions hardcover

1931191907London: The Nonesuch Press 1931. First Nonesuch edition number 650 of 1375 copies of which 900 were released for sale in England. Regarded as the most important Elizabethan translation of any contemporary text the translation's influence on English writers and philosophers of the time - including Shakespeare Bacon Milton Hobbes and Locke - is inestimable. Florio's translation was first published in 1603. This beautifully printed production based on the third edition of 1632 is considered "the most authoritative" Yates p. 242. "Florio's style is clearly visible throughout the translation. His extraordinary skill in the use of alliteration his ability to embroider and amplify the French original through the addition of English synonyms his sense of rhythm his art of turning French proverbs and expressions into idiomatic English equivalents and his experimentation with new-formed English words such as 'conscientious' 'endeare' 'efface' 'facilitate' made his Montaigne one of the great translations of the Elizabethan age" ODNB. 2 vols octavo 208 x 126 mm. Original brown morocco green morocco spine labels 5 raised bands front covers with green morocco onlays framed and lettered "Que scay-je" in gilt green endpapers top edge gilt the rest uncut. Housed in original green card slipcase. Gift inscription dated 1989 on second blank of first volume. Montaigne was amongst the first to shake such fundamental aspects of Western thought as the belief in the superiority of man over animals or European civilisation over "Barbarianism" his approach best being summed-up in the famous epithet 'Que sais-je' 'What do I know'<br /><br />This translation was the final work which the English poet Charles Cotton 16301687 saw through the press. It immediately supplanted the edition by John Florio of 1603 and remained in print well into the twentieth century. The translation was made from the French edition of Pierre Coste 1668-1747.<br /> London, Printed for W.
