438251J. M. Dent & Sons. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. The first edition of John Florio's complete translation was published in 1603 and is notable as the first unabridged translation into any language. This is the Everyman's Library Edition published in 1910.The essays present a wide-ranging exploration of human nature judgment and everyday experience. Rather than formal arguments Montaigne offers personal reflections on subjects such as friendship education courage custom sorrow and the uncertainty of knowledge. He uses classical history philosophy and anecdotes alongside intimate self-observation to examine how people think and behave.A defining feature of these essays is Montaigne’s skepticism toward absolute certainty. He emphasizes the variability of human opinions and the limits of reason encouraging tolerance humility and self-awareness. The self becomes Montaigne’s primary subject not out of vanity but as a means of understanding humanity at large.John Florio’s v J. M. Dent & Sons hardcover
