194826597New York: The Citadel Press. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1948. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. spine moderately turned slight bumping and a bit of wear to most corners; jacket shows a little wear along top edge and at spine extremities light tanning to rear panel. "A startling novel of passion and horror" originally published in France in 1898 as "Le Jardin des Supplices." Supposedly this book was the inspiration in some unspecified fashion for Luis Bunuel' s 1967 film BELLE DE JOUR although the credits proper to the film attribute a novel by Joseph Kessel as source material. A new translation published in paperback in 1995 featured a photo of Catherine Deneuve in the film; a French film adaptation using the original title appeared in 1976. Oscar Wilde is said to have described the book as "revolting -- a sort of grey adder." The book had previously been published in the U.S. in 1931 by Claude Kendall; this edition features a Foreword by James Gibbons Huneker itself actually a reprint from his 1920 book "Bedouins." . 19241630881924. BONNARD Pierre. Dingo. By Octave Mirbeau. 194 4 pp. Illustrated with 55 original etchings by Pierre Bonnard or which 14 are full-page PLUS an additional suite of the 14 full-page etchings on Arches. Folio loose as issued in the original illustrated wrappers in the original half velum clamshell box. Paris: Ambroise Vollard Editeur 1924. In contrast with some of his other books the etchings Bonnard drew for Dingo show a marked playfulness which are at variance with the somewhat imposing format of the book. Dingo is in notable contrast to the smaller Histoires Naturelles by Jules Renard for which Bonnard also provided not too dissimilar illustrations. Dingo is one of five books which Bonnard illustrated for Ambroise Vollard. Clamshell box with some wear cover with a repaired tear along the joint overall a nice clean copy.
