Flandin’s observations on the state of Persia and international politics in the mid-19th century also continue to provide important documentary information. In 1839 Flandin was along with Coste made a laureate of the Institut de France and they both joined the embassy of the Comte de Sercey to Persia. After parting from de Sercey’s mission they left Isfahan with very limited financial means and retinue. Flandin’s courage during this journey which spanned the entirety of Persia was praised by Coste who also noted his intrepidity during times of duress. Their timetable and work were strictly organized. After Flandin’s return to France he was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1842 for his part in this government-sponsored archaeological mission. Keyes 1839. First American Edition of the Pensées. Blaise Pascal 16231662 the great French scientist and religious philosopher was famous as a youth. He wrote a paper before he was 16 on conic sections which won the respect of the mathematicians of Paris. At 19 he invented a calculating machine. Credited with founding the modern theory of probability Pascal also discovered the properties of the cycloid and contributed to the advance of differential calculus. In physics his experiments increased knowledge of atmospheric pressure through barometric measurements and of the equilibrium of fluids see Pascal's law. As a young man Pascal came under the influence of Jansenism and in 1651 his sister Jacqueline who had also embraced Jansenist beliefs entered the convent at Port-Royal the center of the movement. As a result of the death of his father and of his own narrow escape from death Pascal in 1654 experienced what he called a "conversion" and thereafter turned much of his attention to religion. When Antoine Arnauld a noted Jansenist was attacked by the Jesuits Pascal championed him in his Lettre escrite à un provincial 1656. Those Provincial Letters rendered into Latin quickly circulated throughout Europe and they still hold a leading place in the literature of polite irony. Pascal's religious writings were posthumously published as Pensées de M. Pascal sur la religion et sur quelques autres sujets 1670. In the Pensées famous both as a religious and philosophical classic Pascal states his belief in the inadequacy of reason to solve man's difficulties or to satisfy his hopes. He preached instead the final necessity of mystic faith for true understanding of the universe and its meaning to man. W145 Rt/R. Language: eng. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. J. S. and C. Two beautiful photographs by Jean Pascal Sébah 1872-1947 one of the most famous photographers of his time who specialised in Orientalist photography. He continued the business of his father Pascal Sébah 1823-1886 one of the first photographers working in Egypt. Apart from their photographs of important locations in the Middle East the Sébahs were known to stage genre scenes which were used as illustrations in scientific Orientalist publications. The present photographs were likely one of those scenes. They show four Arabic men demonstrating the positions of the raka'ah. The first photographs shows the first and second position standing and bowing or qiyam and ruku. The second photographs shows kneeling and the beginning of prostration or jalsa and sujud.Father and son Sébah rose to prominence because of their well-organized compositions careful lighting and quality of their prints. The present photographs are indeed beautifully lit and composed and still in very good condition despite their age. They are wonderful examples of Jean Pascal Sebah's craftmanship. The photographs are slightly creased and discoloured around the edges but otherwise in very good condition. unknown

Octavo. xxxii 383 1 ads. 9.25" x 6" PASCAL USED FOR BRITISH RELIGIOUS CRITIQUE

Originally published in 1657 Pascal's Provincial Letters scathingly renounced the Jesuits as the order clashed with Jansenists and secular humanists. Eventually the Jesuits were disbanded in 1773 by Pope Clement XIV under political pressures. However as the spirit of revolution died during the Napoleonic aftermath of the French Revolution Western Europe restored its old political order and the papacy revisited Jesuit suppression.

This 1816 edition was published in London just two years after Pope Pius VII released his papal bull Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum called the Late Bull for the Revival of the Order in Europe in this text reinstating the Jesuit order throughout Europe––the first edition of Provincial Letters to include the bull. In a religiously conservative period dominated by the Church of England the pope's change was not received well as it took the Jesuits over a decade to regain traction in England. Pascal's precise biting defense of the inseparability of morality and spirituality resonated with the practical British religious sensibility. Gale and Fenner unknown
