EDGAR ALLAN POE né Edgar Poe; January 19 1809 - October 7 1849 was an American writer poet author editor and literary critic who is best known for his poetry and short stories particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States and of American literature. Poe was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre as well as a significant contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. He is the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19 1809 the second child of American actor David Poe Jr. and English-born actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe. He had an elder brother Henry and a younger sister Rosalie. Their grandfather David Poe had emigrated from County Cavan Ireland around 1750. His father abandoned the family in 1810 and his mother died a year later from pulmonary tuberculosis. Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan a successful merchant in Richmond Virginia who dealt in a variety of goods including cloth wheat tombstones tobacco and slaves. The Allans served as a foster family and gave him the name "Edgar Allan Poe" although they never formally adopted him. The Allan family had Poe baptized into the Episcopal Church in 1812. John Allan alternately spoiled and aggressively disciplined his foster son. The family sailed to the United Kingdom in 1815 and Poe attended the grammar school for a short period in Irvine Ayrshire Scotland where Allan was born before rejoining the family in London in 1816. There he studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until summer 1817. He was subsequently entered at the Reverend John Bransby's Manor House School at Stoke Newington then a suburb 4 miles 6 km north of London. Poe moved with the Allans back to Richmond in 1820. 1879601899New York: Ralph Trautmann 1879. Unbound. Near Fine. Portfolio. Twenty engraved plates and one contents card laid into a four-fold chemise of leather over watered silk. The engraved cards are nicely printed on either white or pale pink cards measuring 5" x 7" with rounded corners and gilt edges. The engraved cards are bright and about fine with the author's name penciled neatly in a tiny hand on the unprinted verso and one with a small penciled note on the front; contents card a trifle foxed with one tiny edge nick. Housed in the worn remains of the four-fold chemise that is lacking several panels including the front cover. We located a couple of examples in the trade of the same engravings but bound accordion-style into cloth. In that case the publisher's information was printed at the bottom of the contents card; we are unsure why it was removed for this iteration. Ralph Trautmann unknown

All 3 volumes are in VERY GOOD condition showing the extremities somewhat shelf rubbed several light surface scuffs the front hinge of Vol. 1 has been neatly repaired from the collection of Clyde Manley with his early bookplate at the front paste-down of Vol. 1 otherwise the binding remain strong and tight the text-block are clean and unmarked and the boards remain bright and distinct. A poem under the heading "Wanted A Wife" has been cut out from page 184 with loss of text to Mary Davenant's story on the verso. Several page corners are creased and there is some occasional soiling and faint minor spots of foxing. <p>The first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "A Tale of the Ragged Mountains" a story which combines mesmerism and reincarnation set near the University of Virginia where Poe had been a student in 1826-7. The pagination of each issue is as follows: October consists of pages 145 through 192 illustrated with 2 engravings; November consists of pages 193-240 illustrated with 2 engravings; and the December issue consists of pages 241-250 and 253-284 illustrated with 2 engravings. Pages 251/2 are lacking from the December issue. Several page corners are creased and there is some occasional soiling throughout. There is minor dampstaining to the bottom edges of the pages with some heavier dampstaining near the rear. <p>The first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "Thou Art the Man!" which is sometimes called the first comic detective story here published on pages 219 through 224 of the November 1844 issue.<p>The editor of Godey's made at least one change in the text: "old fellow" for "old cock".
