Eileen Cond was a socialite and renowned book collector whose practice it was to write to the major authors of the day to request a signed book-plate or signed copy of the author's book. She amassed an enormous library that was scattered to the four winds many years ago. She was particularly close to Ian Fleming and Leslie Charteris. CHARLES E. ROCHESTER GENERAL MANAGER TELEPHONE WICKERSHAM 2-4400 CABLE ADDRESS: LEXTEL HOTEL LEXINGTON LUXINGTON AVENUE AT FORTY-EIGHTH STREET NEW YORK CITY 17.3.33 Dear Eileen Thank you so much for sending along that cutting. It hadnt come my way at all and I should probably have missed it altogether if you hadnt thought of posting it to me. I DO live in England and mostly in London when I can be said to live anywhere; but I travel around a good deal. Ive been here for four months now and before that I was in Spain. Just at the moment I look like going to Hollywood; but when I get back to the land where the cocktails are drinkable and the banks stay open Ill certainly sign a copy of a Saint book for you. If you havent read ONCE MORE THE SAINT - and THE BRIGHTER BUCCANEER - by that time I shall weep for you. Youve only read three saint books What about the other seven or eight Any letter from a reader is always a grand event. Please dont mind writing again any time you feel like it. Sincerely yours Leslie Charteris with his signature in fountain pen black ink The letter is in VG condition with tape residue to all four corners. The letter has two folds to fit into an envelope. Photographs/scans available upon request. unknown
355490719162Signed by Author. A 24-line TLS from Leslie Charteris undated to Eileen Cond. This letter has fascinating content in that it gives Charteris' views of some of his early books and his distaste for some of his earliest efforts pre-Meet the Tiger whereby he tells Eileen Cond: "I can't prevent you knowing about them; but if you do insist on reading them I refuse to answer any letters on the subject". Permanent Address:- c/o RAYMOND SAVAGE LTD 39 JERMYN STREET LONDON W.1 Please Reply to:- 18 Manson Place S.W.7. Miss Eileen M. Cond The Den Hampton in Arden Warwickshire. Dear Eileen Heres your book. Of course Ill do another one for you if you dont like this one. Anyone who actually buys a book these days instead of borrowing it from a library is at least worth an autograph. According to your list youve missed ALIAS THE SAINT and the first Saint book of all MEET THE TIGER which was published by Ward Lock. I had one or two other early book published by Ward Lock but Im not proud of them and Id really prefer you not to drop down from the heights of Saint stories to those very amateurish efforts. If you get hold of MEET THE TIGER youll find those other ones mentioned so I cant prevent you knowing about them; but if you do insist on reading them I refuse to answer any letters on the subject. By short stories I meant the king that you get in the volumes of three like THE HOLY TERROR and not exactly the very short ones like THE BRIGHTER THE BUCCANEER. So there is still hope for us both. After weeping for some time over your sisters disapproval of the end of KNIGHT TEMPLAR Ive decided not to commit suicide. Admittedly it wasnt my best book but you cant be right all the time. Best wishes Leslie Charteris. with his signature in fountain pen black ink The letter is in near fine condition but was probably folded both vertically and horizontally to fit into an envelope. There is a faint rust mark to the top edge caused by a paper-clip although there is nothing attached. Photographs/scans available upon request.
355490713889Signed by Author. Autograph Letter Signed. On the Authors Saint Enterprises Inc letterhead 314 North Robertson Boulevard Holywood 36 California. Dated November 15 1945. Addressed to Mr Henry Bjorling Hantverkaregatan 75A II Norkoping Sweden. Dear Mr Bjorling: Many thanks for your interesting letter. You can be sure I am quite flattered to know that you take the trouble of reading my books in English and I must commend you on how well you have mastered the language. I am enclosing a complete list of all the Saint titles in the order of their writing. They may all be ordered through this office in 25c pocket form. Although a great many of them have not been published by us we will be glad to take orders in advance and mail you the copies as soon as they come off the press which in most cases will probably be some time next year. The charge is 25 American cents per book. I am sorry to say we do not mail books for payment on delivery. However the Saint series is also published in Swedish and perhaps you can find some you have missed so far in your native language. I dont know the name of the Swedish publisher since all that is handled by an agent of mine in New York. I am enclosing the autographed photo you asked for. Sincerely Leslie Charteris. Signed in ink. The one-page letter is in near fine condition although it is a little creased in places

Addressed to Mr Henry Bjorling Hantverkaregatan 75A Norrkoping 6 Sweden. Dear Mr Bjorling: Thank you very much for your letter and the Swedish jokes. You will find a reference to it in the enclosed which is a weekly service that I circulate to a number of subscribers. Im only sorry that the story I like best the one about the young girl who didnt know which boy to marry seemed just a little too risqué for this particular kind of publication. Yours sincerely Leslie Charteris. Signed in ink. The one-page letter is in fine condition as is the mimeographed separate A Letter from the Saint also dated January 16 1947 which is referred to in the original letter.
